Retaining EXIF when using Photoshop?

Hi all,

Hopefully a quick question.

If I use Lightroom and export from Lightroom, EXIF data remains intact.

If I edit a photo in Lightroom, then take it out into Photoshop for some edits (for example, adding some text) and then' Save for Web', it strips all EXIF data. I have now found out that this is a 'feature' of CS4.

How else to I save a JPG from Photoshop CS4 without stripping the EXIF?

Thanks

Are you editing it in 16bit mode? If you've opened the RAW file you might be.

If so, Image > Mode > 8 bits/channel.

If not, I have no idea as it's an option for me when using CS4.

Ah yes, that seems to have fixed the problem.

So this will definitely keep the EXIF data, even if I have added text layers?

Does changing to 8 bits/channel cause any loss of quality in the final image?

Yup it should be fine. The quality is only set at the end when saving the image and text layers shouldn't effect the saving of exif data either.

The bit depth just refers to the number of bits to store the value of each colour for each pixel, so it shouldn't cause a loss of quality but it would have the result of effecting the dynamic range of the image I believe. Not many people use monitors capable of displaying higher bit depths so I don't think it's an issue. cykeys HDR guide mentions it but it's a tad confusing :p
