Quick question - I'm sim only on Vodafone with a month left of contract. Looking at some phone contract 'black friday' deals online for a new (in this case) Note 9. Phone will come with a new sim and number but still on Vodafone. Is it a right PITA to move my number to new contract? I'm aware if I was going to another network then just a matter of a pac code and then port. How on earth do I swap my sim only voda contract number to the new Voda phone contract. I'm more inclined to buy the Note sim free then flog the S9plus except even with BF discounts are silly money. Needless to say the online retailer is an independent.

The deal looks good but I generally go sim only and buy my phone so probably stick with what I have. I have an S9plus but have always fancied a Note. Vodaphone being what they are I imagine the number swap thing could be a pain?

I read on another forum that you'd have to port out to say giffgaff then port back to the new contract. Seemed like a faff. If Vodafone do it all then so much the better.

I dont know if its changed, but I have to talk with Vodafone reps as part of my job and they used to tell me that you would, as Richy888 says, have to port out your number to another provider and then port it back again. It sounds baffling to me, but there you have it.

The standard is to port out to another network then back in but some networks do seem to offer in network porting these days.

I did this for my dad a few months ago and you just put your current contract onto PAYG, wait a month (think this was because of billing period on existing contract) then get it swapped over.

Bit of a faff but it seems to be the only way to get new customer deals which are almost always better than upgrades

Ridiculous really. I've a month to go on a sim only contract. If I was to take a deal off an online retailer for a phone on contract on same network (Vodafone in this case) I'd have to go through that carry on just to keep my number. Probably why I'll stay sim only and stick with the S9. I dont really like 2 year contracts anyway but would do it if the deal was right. Some not bad black Friday deals on Note9 but not at Vodafone themselves. I've no network allegence either, it's just Vodafone works well here.

I'm on EE and when I mistakenly ordered a New Contract instead of an Upgrade through Carphone Warehouse I had to port out to GiffGaff then back again to keep my old number as neither EE or Carphone Warehouse were able to carry out a number swap.

I couldn't get my head around with all the technology we have that EE couldn't just swap my number over?

That was over a year ago, so possibly things might have changed? Although coming into work tonight a colleague, who's with O2 told me that they carried out the number swap when he called them to cancel his previous contract as he had just upgraded to a 9 Note on a New Contract with O2 as it was cheaper than an Upgrade and was happy to have to change his number to take advantage of the saving. Needless he was very pleased to find out he in fact didn't have to.

Three have just ported my old three number to a new "BF" deal contract, all done in under 8 hours after the new sim arrived.
