retention/ replacement registration number

hi, ive just joined & need some info. i bought a car with a private plate on. i have applied by post on 26th may, to put the number on retention. as i want the car back on its 07 plate. i have not received any phone call or email from dvla yet, regarding the replacement/new 07 registration number the car is going to receive. how long do i expect to wait, or dvla to contact me ? thanks. steve @ hebburn.

Whoa, Steve! I wouldn't broadcast that you're in Hebburn!

Post and processing at the DVLA is slow as hell at the minute, I'd give it another week or so.

should have done it online. instand confirmation of new plate and received retention cert within the week (pre lockdown)

How does retention work now? Back in the day it was something like £100 for 1 year or £200 for 2 years pounds to put plates on retention, i always thought this was a rip off.

£80 for 10 years last time I did it a couple years back

Your not wrong about the DVLA being slow. I'm waiting for my V5 to come through before I can even get my private plate on. I'm thinking August.

You can take plates on and off via their website can't you? Online the transfer is instant but you do have to wait for the V5 to come through.

You can indeed, and you can start using the plate straight away, they also give you proof to show plate makers if needed at the time of assignment.

That's brilliant, so once my V5 arrives I simply do it online and put the plates straight on?

hi, re- my retention certificate.( sent 26/05) i was informed i had to apply by post and not online, as the car is on a sorn.and i cannot afford to tax/insure 2 cars. with the covid situation there will be less staff at dvla to deal with all applications. i have sent a email today, to dvla ( from above post) to enquire. thank you" the oracle" for the link. . steve.
