Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone with the new retina MacBook had tried using something like DisplayMenu to raise the resolution above the preset options Apple provides.

Obviously 2304x1440 is going to require a magnifying glass, but I just wondered what the other options are.

Cheers!

Edit - Just seen that this is for the new MacBook... I missed off the "new" bit when I read your post - I also did think it was odd you didn't mention a size but seeing as there is only one size of the rMB it now makes sense :p

Using display menu on a 15" rMBP I get the following options...

2880 x 1800
2560 x 1600
2048 x 1280
1680 x 1050
1440 x 900
1280 x 800
1024 x 640
840 x 525
720 x 450
1024 x 768
800 x 600

At max setting it is a little difficult to read but I can manage it (albeit not for any great length of time - although I do use it if I have a big spread sheet to look over). The sweet spot for me is 2048 x 1280 which I use all the time and 2560 x 1600 when I really need lots more space which isn't too often.

Ah well, thanks for trying. :D

As an update, I popped into the Apple Store Regent Street yesterday and managed to run DisplayMenu on one of the models. The only HiDPI options available were the ones in the preferences menu anyway, but non-HiDPI was available all the way up to 2880x1800.

I found 1920x1200 perfectly legible without squinting though, and even without HiDPI it looked sufficiently crisp at that res. It's probably the highest I'd go through.

I run mine at 1920*1200 and at work its about 1.5 feet away and its perfectly visible too me.

This makes it hugely more tempting to me. The thought of having all that extra real estate is... more than tempting. It's just justifying the upgrade from a 2011 air it doesn't significantly outperform.
