Hello all, long time lurker, first time poster. And I hate to say it, but I open with a 'spec me' thread!

So after many years of reliable service (6-10 years depending on the component), my old PC is long overdue replacing, and I've finally got the money together to do it.

I need everything for the tower; case, components, OS etc.
My keyboard, mouse and monitor (Logitech G11, MX518, Syncmaster XL2370) all still run fine, unless anyone has a reason to replace them?

Apart from the usual admin and internet lark, the main uses for the computer are gaming (although the old system hardly pulls it weight for this any more), and 3D design/rendering. I'm a garden designer so do use programmes like Vectorworks and Sketchup to create some 3D models and plans, and my current system does struggle with running a complex model with full shadows and rendering.

Budget is around £1500, although if we can come in under I won't complain. Overclocking is not something I've ever done, but could be convinced to try. I'll try not to leave it another 6 years before I upgrade, but if I can get a system that I can easily chuck £300 at a few years down the line to keep it up to spec, that would be useful.

The only thing I'd really decided on for parts, was an Aerocool X Predator case, since I really fancied the idea of a green/black or orange/black colour scheme. Because it looks cool.

Thanks for any advice offered.

Hi welcome :)

Here is a Green/Black build using a decent case :D Sorry but I am not a huge fan of Aerocool cases, although it is your build so feel free to tell me to **** off :D

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gainward GeForce GTX 780 Phantom 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £379.99
1 x Intel Core i7-4770K 3.50GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - OEM £249.95

Total : £1,473.30 (includes shipping : £8.00).

It comes in at the top end of your budget. You could trim the cost down by dropping the Green extension cables and LED strip, and by fitting a 120GB SSD instead of a 250GB. You can also drop the psu down a few notches if you don't intend on going Sli/Crossfire.
Some of the Green cables are out of stock atm so you would need to check with ocuk when they are due back in as it could delay the order.

If you wanted an Orange/Black build then swap these parts in, and obviously change the green cables to Orange ones. I have included 2 sets of Ram (LED and non LED)

Thanks for the build advice, anything particularly wrong with the aerocool cases or is it just aesthetic preference? Honestly, styling comes a distant second to performance so it isn't a big issue.

Hadn't really seriously considered an external drive, but I'll give it some thought now for practical applications!

I think it is a mixture of Aesthetics and performance. A lot of the Aerocool towers don't get good reviews from what I have seen. If I was spending £1500 on a pc I would want a good solid case that will provide good airflow and have plenty of room for upgrades etc.

This is a pretty good Orange/Black case, although it is out of stock at the moment.

my gf has the aerocool case and it's fine if you like that kind of thing but to me the entire build quality just feel a bit cheap which for the size of case i suppose it is really

As it sounds like you'd like to save a bit of money, not overclock, but keep an upgrade path, maybe go for lee32uk's build, but with a lower-end i5 processor, and the suggestions he made (smaller SSD and PSU):

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4440 3.10GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £139.99
1 x Samsung 120GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE120BW) £68.99
1 x BeQuiet Pure Power L8 600W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply - With 120mm Silent Wing Fan Built in £53.99
Total : £272.57 (includes shipping : £8.00).

That shaves £267 off if you use the retail cooler.

Here's a little comparison of CPUs
http://ark.intel.com/compare/75038,52214,52210,75123,75048
£250, 4770K, can overclock, hyperthreaded, clock speeds of 3.5/3.9, 8 M cache
£180, 4670K, can overclock, clock speeds 3.4/3.8, 6 M cache
£138, 4430, clock speeds 3.1/3.3, 6 M cache

As it sounds like you're struggling on with your current PC even the 4430 would be a huge step up, and honestly if you're not buying to overclock you won't notice a few hundred MHz difference. You can always then pick up a Haswell i7 for an upgrade in a few years.
