Retro console and games thread

Yeah £27 isn't too bad in fairness, truxton is a classic too and seems to fetch a few quid these days

I had a bit of a binge on lynx games, now have boxed copies of batman returns, roadblasters, xeonphobe and steel talons amongst others :). Really loving the old console atm

Well that got out of hand quickly...

Managed to also grab one of the 4 or 5 remaining Snes games I was after for an sensible price.

Apparently the Saturn was but it was harder to programme for. I remember when I was younger I read something about 2D games being better on the Saturn and 3D games being better on the PS1.

Saturn was a REALLY powerful unit for the time, but as above a pig to code for as Sega used a 2 Hitachi processor setup in the system, which is what in a large part helped to kill it off :(. The PSone was apparently a utter gem to code for and then development kits were child's play

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Saturn#Technical_specifications - worth a read if you geeky as me :D

They got it to work well in some cases e.g. virtua fighter where a processor controls each fighter on the screen independently and nights did the 3d / 2d on separate processors

Smart little peeps at Sega, just not that great at making it feasible in the real world

Great selection of games there Johnny, beware....the Saturn catalogue is large and awesome!, hence why I have 50 odd games lol

I had a Saturn from close to release with about 20 - 30 games, including gems such as Guardian Heroes and Bomberman, I then moved out and left this all boxed in my parents loft.

Forward on 8 Years and I find out they scrapped everything in the loft that wasn't photo albums...

The main difference between my Saturn and Snes collections has been those Saturn games have been snagged for £2 - £3 each, although the Gem I didn't expect so quickly was the boxed Nights / 3D Controller bundle, did pay more for that but still felt £25 was a steal.

Guardian Heroes is the game I absolutely want but seems to be £30 up which again like my self imposed SNes collection rules, is more then I am willing to pay, so will have to wait and see if I get lucky, gonna install a 50-60hz switch tonight.

Has anyone here bought games from RetroGames.co.uk, if so what are your experiences like, they do seem to have an amazing selection? I just a received a copy of Bomberman Online for the Dreamcast, it was advertised on the site with a Disc being in 10/10 condition which to me means pretty close to perfect, if not like new. Sadly it came with quite a few scratches on the disc and thankful the site owner has happily agreed to refund me. Maybe I'm getting too fussy about the condition of discs but I suppose it depends on the price as well.

Does condition really matter to you guys when buying retro games, I understand a lot of this stuff is starting to get really old so we can't expect perfect examples but with the premiums a lot of them are starting to fetch I think being fussy is a warranted choice.

Indeed. I am starting to focus a bit more on the Saturn at the moment. There are a number of games I want for it that I have never played before (I had a PS1 at the time).

I just wish we got the US cases for both Saturn and Dreamcast games. When I find a game I want it is never in the condition where I am willing to pay for it! :(

Saying that I did manage to pick up Virtua Fighter 1 and V-Rally 2 (DC) both in excellent condition. V Rally 2 is also quite addictive and vastly superior in content to SR2.

On another note my Phat PS2 has stopped playing any of my PS1 games. I just get a green screen instead. Is this because I am outputting the PS2 via component? If so I will switch my PS2 back to composite and run my Wii (GC) via component instead.

Could well be the component output yes mate, i have a fully wired acart cable instead, still looks epic

That AES is awesome, one day i will have one!

Picked this up today. Won it for 99p. Sold as untested. Best 99p i've spent ever on eBay lol. Its a 20" JVC Broadcast Monitor. Picture is outstanding!
