Retro console and games thread

X-Men vs Street Fighter on the Saturn was the pinnacle of 2D gaming.

Agreed, Capcom in their greatest of days. Street Fighter Alpha/Zero 3 was great on the Saturn too because that used the ROM cart too. Then that was surpassed by the Dreamcast and PSP version years on.

Look what santa dropped off at IRN!

But but but.... why?!?!?!

That is the antichrist of retro gaming.

I had a lot of respect for you Neil... HAD

:D

Hah, I've got a Sega Megadrive II and Sega CD and my brother has a NES and SNES, so it would be good to compare. Ok so it's not the real thing but it does allow you to use original games. That's what we are going to review, is it any good, don't know yet :)

Neil that is an awesome piece of kit! I would love to own a Speccy version if one was ever made. Show us some more pics!

Trust message sent!

Im only jesting ;) (jealous much?)

Look forward to your review bud!

Have decided I am definitely selling the Saturn stuff, don't want it to get out of hand and fill my office / den with a ton of retro gaming items I never play, so will punt it all and grab the remaining Snes stuff I really want and stick with that.

SNES wanted list is:

Final Fantasy 3
Chrono Trigger
Ghouls n Ghosts
R-Type 3
Yoshi's Island
Super Metroid (I have this but unboxed, my one cart only title, would also like the NTSC version)

Shame I can't use Members Market, I had thought it was 500 posts, doh

It is emulation still as they use a system on chip setup. I seem to recall hearing that the creators of the Retron 5 (a similar system) recently got busted for using some emu software on it without the authors permission.

Yeah, I remember hearing on a retro podcast they don't actually play games from the cart. They do a temporary dump of the cart to the ROM and it plays from there until you switch the console off. Which explains why there are a few reports of glitches or certain PAL games not working. If it was manufactured from true hardware then these issues wouldn't appear.

I could be wrong but I really think this does play them from the cart and is classed as a "clone system" because the ICs inside attempt to copy the hardware. If you watch the vids you can see there is no rom dump nor menu system to control aspects of the emulation as with the retron units.

the Retron 5 is an android OS based emulator but this retro trio has no OS I don't think.

Maybe Neil79 can settle it when he gets a chance to take a look at it.
