mini mega drive on its way to do battle with the mini nez

not probably as good as the nes though.

It doesn't look bad, if anything, it's the same thing that's been re-released several times over the last few years. The biggest issue it's that it's made my AtGames and let's just say, they're not the most diligent. It'll be the sound emulation that's pants. It's what ruins most emulated Sega Megadrive games. Even the packs that Sega release themselves onto steam have dodgy sound and were never sorted out.

Just a quickie, going to start collecting and first thing I want to secure is a TV. Is it best to avoid widescreen CRT and go for say 21-26" normal one 4:3? I think actually 26 may be too big.
I also read there are ways to improve picture with either a 'special' SCART or RGB for some consoles. Is there any favorable tv makes for getting the best picture I can out of my consoles?

sony trinitron are quite well regarded. You will want to use RGB scart cables when available. Some consoles require small to large mods to get RGB from. The N64 being quite difficult for the common UK models at least.

Thank you. I'll get the TV sorted first and then worry about hte rest. I presume most older consoles were outputting 4:3 and not widescreen? Got it in my head I want max 26"

Do you have a british heart foundation near you? I searched ebay and gumtree for a local trinitron for a few weeks with no luck. Popped into my local BHF and they had atleast 6 different styles of trinitron on the shelf! What was better was they had a sale on so got mine for less than £10 if i remember

I'm toying the with idea of buying a few retro console etc. I like to collect random stuff and I've got bored of the current collecting of board games and Lego. I collect vintage and modern RC cars which doesn't seem to actually stop but I have a spare shelf that might be for console goodies.

I'd like a Neo Geo but not entirely sure where to start. I'd like to get SNES and MegaDrive in the future.

Do you need a CRT TV? I sold a mate my Sony Wega 32" monster not so long ago so could see if he still has it - it's truly gigantic compared to the panels of today.

Is it possible to run the consoles through a receiver?

Is it just ebay to look for things? Is it worth looking at yahoo Japan through JAUCE? I use JAUCE for RC rarity finds.

You don't need a CRT, but if you want the best aspect ratios (i.e not having your pixels blurred/stretched to fit a HD screen) then CRT is the way to go.

Beyond that, a flat panel display with lots of connectivity will help. Ideally something that covers the bulk of retro consoles, so VGA (Dreamcast specific), SCART, Composite (Red, White, Yellow) and component will get you through most consoles.

I specialise in collecting Japanese consoles/games and get all my stuff through an eBay store called Yamatoku. Delivery is expensive on more modern/heavy consoles, but anything light like a Super Famicom/PC Engine will be very cheap and you can save a lot with combined shipping.

I've put a few of their offerings on my watchlist, thank you.

Couple of questions:-

MegaDrive JDM vs UK - IIRC the difference was just a little bit of plastic stopping the JDM games fitting the UK - or vice versa.

Super Famicom Vs SNES - I don't remember but it wasn't a physical difference was it? SF games won't work in a SNES?

I used to have a modded PS2 with a flip up lid so I could spin the load disc then put in JDM games. Only did it so I could play Initial D :)

Oh, also had an Amiga 500 with the Action Replay cartridge. Loved that thing :)

Yeah the MD had 2 plastic lugs either side of the cartridge slot that prevented import games being used. As I stick to Japanese hardware/games, it's rarely an issue for me. If I do want to sample NTSC-U (or the odd PAL exclusive) I'll throw on the Everdrive to give them a go.

No physical difference between JP SNES and PAL, just the lockout built into the cartridges. The US SNES was entirely different (and ugly), although I like their controller colour scheme, not as a preference but just for a change.

Picked up a joblot of Amiga hardware yesterday 1x Amiga A600 3x Amiga A500

Untested, unclean and one was in bits!

Cleaned them up, resocketed the chips, repaired the taken apart Amiga and done a good test!

Result : Sold 2x Amiga 500's and 1x Amiga 600. Kept one Amiga 500 for myself and used a working Floppy drive for my original Amiga 600 I already have :D

Would I be better off, with the Nintendo at least, buying a SNES?

Aren't all the JDM games in Japanese? Is it particularly difficult to get SNES games running on a SF?

I would rather the original Neo Geo than the X

I nearly bought an Atari Lynx MK1 not long ago but sadly it didn't work.

Just seeing what would be worth getting.

I have:
PS1, 2, 3 and 4.
SNES
Nintendo 64
Commodore 64
Xbox One
Vic 20
Gamecube

was out about in Canterbury and the old girl said she'd treat me to a console I found in a retro shop, the mega drive 1 (with the surround sound) but wasn't sure what games it had apart from Sonic and Aladin that my grandad now has.

What console would be worth getting? If any?

Megadrive is a great console still will loads of great games

Personally I think no retro collection should be without a saturn or dreamcast either. Both awesome bits of kit :)

So I have 2 gigantic boxes of gaming stuff I am parting with to support our move. Lots of stuff in there but nothing I would miss thankfully.

Trying to sell it as a bulk lot atm to guy I know who owns retro shop :)
