Retro console and games thread

Cool as ****?

or Just buy a NES?

I love the fact that this exists and really admire the engineering that goes into it. Also that the technology is available to do this in your own home.

Definitely some very clever and talented people doing things just because they can.

Fantastic.

I've gone and bought a Saturn. This is the first time I've even seen one let alone play one! It's been region modded with a 50/60hz switch so I have an option for games.

I've not considered one at all before, but when I saw the vid posted earlier in the thread it piqued my interest.

Funny, I started looking because of that video, how much did you pay for that one mate?
I haven't got one (yet)

Gutted about this saturn talk! i had one back in 6th form 8/9 years back, so me and some mates went to the indie game store i worked at, bought 2 wheels and light guns plus some games then set it up in the common room! it got ruined and i guess i just left it there, cant remember! wish i kept it all really!

Does anyone have any recommendations for DS games and GBA games? For the DS I'm not interested in the 3D home console ports eg Need for Speed as I had a PSP, which was much better at that sort og game, but more interested in the more unusual games (3D or otherwise).

For GBA I'm interested in anything really except Pokémon.

There's loads of answers for this question. 2 of the most commercially successful formats of all time so a massive library to choose from.

I only have a classic GB Pocket with a few games and no GBC or GBA but there will be countless guides out there on the best games for the system. I've long since sold my GBA (regret) but I do have a small collection of (mostly) US DS games as I feel in love with this system from the get go (about 50 games atm). I prefer the US cases and artwork and often were cheaper than the PAL equivalents. Games I've personally enjoyed are:
  • Meteos (weird musical/space themed Columns/Tetris a-like puzzler)
  • Zoo Keeper
  • New Super Mario Bros
  • Mario Kart DS (one of the better entries in the series although the more recent 7 & 8 were belters too)
  • Super Mario 64 DS (really just for it's mini games back in the day before iPhone and gaming on smart phones became reality)
  • Mario & Luigi RPG games - Partners in Time & Bowser Inside Story (only played the latter mind)
  • Dragon Quest IX (loved this and still need to complete)
  • The World Ends With You
  • Rocket Slime
  • 42 All-Time Classics (UK names was called something else in the US, love this game collection for the darts)
  • Tetris DS
  • Castlevania games - think there is 3 games for the system
  • Advance Wars Dual Strike (although the GBA original is considered the best again another one I prefer and poured hours into)
  • Brain Age (for the Sudoku as it was great, probably done better on smart phones now)
  • Puzzle Quest
  • Magnetica
  • Both DS Zeldas (I've only played the first one again).
  • The Prof. Leyton series
  • Clash of Heroes (released on other formats but definitive on DS. Some bad pacing and difficulty spikes in SP, but one of my faves of the lot).

I've got some other games not played but highly regarded:
  • Ghost Trick
  • Okamiden
  • Radiant Historia
  • Chrono Trigger (a very solid port)
  • Infinite Space

Probably loads that I know I've missed but a reasonable stab to start with based on the games I've played and can remember. I did have a link to a reasonable top 50 DS games to own article when the DS was 9 years old from C&VG but obvious was removed at some point over the years. Again loads of other guides out there. Some games do get expensive but not yet anywhere near the most expensive system to collect for.

DS is region free so you can buy US and Japanese releases but the small library of DSi enhanced games are region locked (Mario Vs. Donkey Kong Mini Land Mayhem is an example of this). I've heard other stories of games like Pokemon Black & White being region locked but bought the PAL version of White so can't confirm.

A few more tips for collecting:
  • US and Japanese release also come in better lock cases and art or logos on their spines. The UK PAL/Euro releases came in bigger, slightly uglier clear cases with text down the spine. If you see a US/Japanese release in one of these clear cases it means a fake or not original packaging. I've seen one UK PAL release (42 All-Time Classics in US/Japanese style packaging which I bought from Tesco's years ago so the reverse did happen but rarely).
  • There are lots of fake GB/GBC/GBA and DS games out there so be very wary on eBay becuase it's very easy to end up with a fake for no discount. You'll need to search for a guide but some giveaways for the DS are; No Nintendo logo on the connectors of the cartridge, poor quality and ineligible artwork on the carts, US ratings but with Euro PAL packaging, games advertised as working on DS/DS Lite but not DSi or DSI XL which is a giveaway of a pirated game as the DSi consoles have far better protection to lock out then popular R4 cards etc. Again probably loads I've forgotten. Just need to be careful on eBay becuase these are probably two most popular formats for fake carts.
  • One last thing. The DS does lead nicely into the 3DS where you see a continuation of the same series and games and the 3DS can play DS games (not native resolution but still OK) so may be a future format to think about. 3DS are region locked though but my UK 3DS XL plays all DS games I've thrown at it.

Hope that helps.

Ball is cracked on the NG joystick so going to change that and maybe the buttons too.

Can't wait for them to arrive. :)

I really wanted that style of MD box.

I remember in early 90s going to a computer show at Crystal Palace when Mega Drives were only just coming out. To see the white boxes with the red and green MD rather than the UK boxes we got suggested something magical lurked within. It was just accepted whether right or wrong that the JDM versions were better = more cool.

I had a SNES and played the nipples off it. Endless F Zero and Pilot Wings etc.

As for the Neo Geo, a mates relative had one following a trip to Japan - he also bought a JDM Mega Drive and Mega CD. The Mega CD and Neo Geo were so rare at the time it was almost unheard of to have such things.

I have up to 2 months before I have to ship them over (together with a rare RC car) so I might add a Saturn and a Mega CD next month.

Lottery win?

Not too bad I think. Rather than from "The Usual Auction Site", I buy from Yahoo Japan using a proxy bidding site (JAUCE is my choice, not cheap but I trust them, there are others). This is the first time I've used them for consoles but have used them regularly for RC cars. Everything arrives safe and sound but they won't fiddle customs so that needs to be taken into account. I have a spreadsheet that calculates a rough UK landed price.

Seeing all the retro purchases is making me want to buy more console goodness! I fancy getting a Dreamcast again.

EddScott, may I ask what the car you're getting is?

Off topic post ahoy - apologies.

It's a Losi XXX4. Looks near enough mint from the photos and as its in Japan the final bid was quite low.

I usually bid on Tamiya Avante, Egress and Top Forces - I've brought over a fair few of them, easily double figures altogether. Don't make a fortune but enough to cover a Tamiya 30th Anniversary Porsche 934 RSR I imported.

My best recent score is a Yokomo MR4 BX - New in box and still sealed and at a really good price. BUT, it's sealed and I'm unlikely to build it so I don't even know whats really in it :D

Discover Japanese auction sites + all your money = "Stuff! Wonderful, magical Stuff!"

Ooh, very nice! I remember both of those cars, back in the days when motors were brushed and batteries started with N!

I'm now going to look there for both car and console stuff, I really do fear for my bank balance!
