Retro console and games thread

If you stick to the proper releases then they aren't too bad. I think they are vastly over priced when you can get a better experience on PC for free.

Depends on what you're used too. I have an original MD on a Sony Trinitron via RGB SCART and emulation on any system is garbage by comparison.

I've got Capcom Vol 1 and Metal Slug 3 for PS2 and they are ok.

I'll fire it up and compare to PC and see the differences are.

Just tried a few games from Capcom Classics (Final Fight, SF2, Ghosts 'n' Goblins) plus Metal Slug 3.

Compared to PC emulation they are on a par I'd say. Just be aware that I was playing PS2 on a CRT TV via RGB SCART and PC was on a 1080p LCD.

As for emulating other consoles it's not quite as good.

I ran Sonic from Sega Classics on PS2, again on CRT via RGB and the same game on original hardware on CRT via RGB.

PlayStation 2

Cant beat the original hardwares crispness!

Indeed, RGB through a Good CRT can't beat. My Snes Mini through my PVM looks sweet!

I remember when I first got a Megadrive back in the day.
I invested in a fully wired scart cable, cost me £25 I think, difference was night and day,
between the composite ones you got. On a Trinitron it looked ace.

Every console after that, always made sure I had the best lead I could get.
Even had to buy a Jap scart lead for PS1, as uk were carp.

To be fair, you only get that image quality via RGB.

The PS2's emulation is like composite.

Consoles emulated on PC can look better than those emulated on other consoles.

Indeed rgb has made a massive difference for me on my trinitron and i wouldnt have been aware of it without this thread, saying that it was probably yourself that helped me out with it :D flying the rgb flag! Thanks

And all of my information came from far more knowledgeable contributors to this thread.

It's been a blessing and a curse. Because once you've sampled the best image quality then there's no going back.

So my Xbox emulator experiment turned into £60 paper weight.

Yea when something better is available, it must be had!

Got the cable, thanks barmy.

I bought TOCA touring 1 on PS1 a while back now, it said PAL, booklet was in english, case writing was in english but only got Italian and Spanish languages? The disc was english on it too..

I loved TOCA, I have find memories of my brother and I using the link cable to play two players. Lugging a CRT TV plus everything else to one anothers house was a pain. But well worth it for a full screen each.

Latest arrival from Japan!

A JP Mega Drive, in box which is in very good condition (slight sun damage to the lid of the box, nothhing major). I was able to get this for $7.50 from an auction, so pleased with it. I love the colour scheme on the JP Mega Drive, and the larger 16-BIT insignia, just as I remember it from childhood.

Also got Super Mario Land 2 boxed for Game Boy & V-Tetris for my Virtual Boy. I'm going for a full Japanese set for Virtual Boy, there are one or two expensive ones but as it's a small library, will get there eventually.
