Retro console and games thread

Same as mate tbh. All Slimline has infrared receiver built in where only the silver fat consoles had it. Think that was maon difference bar the general size

I really want to buy a SNES, as my other thread shows, but I am so paranoid about getting ripped off with a dodgy machine or finding that the games look like **** when played on my 24" LCD TV. Theres no way I could get an old CRT one because I dont have the space for it

Depends on what your planning to do with it.

I have a limited edition ps2 fat, which I didn't fancing butching so I just picked up a slim one for £50 pounds from a famous exchange place. They a lot cheaper on eBay, but I cba to mess around with delivery and so forth.

The slim 7xxx models seems to be the modders choice (not chipping), while the fat ones are cheaper, like with the ps3. A lot of people played films on them and could suffer from lens and motor issues.

I may drag my fat one out one day and hdd mod it so I can install Linux.

They can play PS1 games, yes. They play all retails games AFAIK and we can't talk about modchips etc on here.

They are capable of playing ps1 games. unfortunately both ps1 and ps2 are region locked, and that's the reason why I've modded mine. So I could play my import games, its a hell lot easier to do on the ps2 slim than the fat.

Also certain games like MGS VR missions do not work on the ps2 fat or ps3 as they require disc swapping/checking with another disc. It works fine with the ps2 slim thou.

I thought I'd put this in here instead of starting a new thread.

After reading about the console wars etc on Wikipedia and watching some youtube videos I've decided I really want a early 90s console- Either SNES or a Megadrive. Which do you think is better to own today- reliability, game price, accessories available...? Which has the better (readily available) games?

I can get both for £40 from my local independent game shop if I decide I can't be arsed with fannying around on eBay.

Cheers for linking that poll, but I'm more interested in it from a practical perspective compared to the comments remembering their favourite game as I have no nostalgia of either console (I was too busy watching thunderbirds and stingray)

I imagine that due to age they'll both be a little sketchy. My Megadrive was pretty bulletproof way back when, I can't comment on how the hardware has fared with age though...

My two SNES still work fine. Hardware wise, I think they will both be much the same. Carts need cleaning every so often etc, not really much to go wrong.

For the record though Snes>Megadrive. Super Metroid alone makes that true

Anyway. Finished modding my GBC.

For my first attempt, not too bad.

Dust is problem as always, despite my best efforts some got in. Luckily for some reason most of it can only be seen side on at an angle you couldn't play at anyway.Not even sure where it is, as it can be on the back of the screen shield, front/back of the light or on the screen.

That weird banding effect is only there on picture, don't know what causes it or how to take pic without it

Hard to take a good picture, but results are pretty nice. Colours are a little washed out, just like on the front lit GBA, but it's better than not being able to see the screen

In the process of getting Puzzle Bobble and Fatal Fury 2 for the Neo. My cab came with a Multi cart which was a bad idea as I find so many games I want to own on it.

Another quick retro question! What is the best side scrolling platform Mario game for gba and/or ds? I have a ds lite so can play both GBA and DS games. I'm planning on getting the original Super Mario Bros (gba port), but wonder what other side scrolling platform Mario game to try...

...can someone please explain the Mario naming system!
