Retro console and games thread

So after finding all my old consoles i decided that i needed to pick up a decent CRT as they looked awful on my LCD tv.

This is what i ended up getting for £10! Sony Trinitron 21" with stereo sound :D RGB looks stunning through it. Just means i need to get RGB cables now for the majority of my systems. I have a NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Dreamcast and hopefully arriving this week an Japanese Megadrive. Me and my young Son can now enjoy some old retro games :-)

Got to say, i'm pretty chuffed with it!

Nice

If you can get the DC hooked up via VGA (most likely to your LCD TV). This will offer the best DC picture quality possible (well short of VGA to HDMI upscaling and/or emulation). RGB is still good mind, and will be better on the CRT than the LCD TV.

Picked up a few more games yesterday:

Damn Re-loaded looks naff, even for a PS1 game (played via PS2 w/component). Great fun though for such a simple game. Still searching the house for my Saturn AV cable so I can play loaded though... no luck yet :o:(

I really wanted to get GTA:SA on the xbox but it was (more than) three times the price of the PS2 version. Was it a limited release on the Xbox or something?

Could have spent quite a bit as Insane had 20%-40% off all of their used games. Had to reign myself in though as I already have enough to play as it is.

It's on the Dreamcast . It's the only system I have an rgb cable for. I had just got the tv home in the picture and was just testing.

I have a room which runs under the stairs. It's actually a decent size, perfect for a little retro corner :-)

Frikkin awesome.

Ihave a double garage and Im tempted to convert half of it into a games room.

I'm tempted to get a VGA cable for my Dreamcast as they're only a tenner on the bay. Im not sure how many games support it though...

Im using the component cable on my ps2 and it is so much better than the AV cable! I think a few ps2 games support 480p, I know GH 2 does...

Its more of a what games don't tbh and then the jap counterparts do if you have a import boot disk. Sega Rally and SNK vs Capcom being too which come to mind. The only one in my collection i think that doesn't worm is deadly skies

Defo recommend getting one, Dead Or Alive looks INCREDIBLE!

right....now I have learnt how to use the internet....

My freebie from today.....proper chuffed!

Nice pick up there buddy. I'm waiting in anticipation for my Mega drive to show up this week. Its an asian model, so has the enlarged cart slot. Will perform a region select and 50/60hz switch mod if needed :D

Sonic 1,2 and Streets of Rage. Awesome games. Get yourself a Decent RGB cable!

Already have a 60hz switch modded uk mk1 with a consolegoods.co.uk RGB cable :)

Most likely sell this one on. Proper chuffed about the menacer and boxed complete copy of SOR 1 though.

Sweet! Just picked up boxed copies of body blows, mortal kombat 2 and Zool for £10 posted too

Also had a quick check of the bay and had won a boxed copy of super off road for 3.59 posted too.....quite a good retro day it appears!

I thought about the VGA route for a while, but then I was thinking about the aspect ratios and with my LCD being widescreen i'd have to run it in 4:3 mode and black bars either side would bother me. I'm really fussy with things like that LoL.

Really if i was to go the LCD route then i would want an XRGB mini, but i ain't a drug dealer and can't pony up the cash for one, even though they are a fantastic bit of kit.

My £10 old CRT will do for now, and it has that sense of nostalgia about it when I play on it :-) which is part of the reason I love playing on retro stuff.

I love the SN Pro pad for the snes but sadly mine from back in the day was looking a little worse for wear so I decided to give a fresh coat of paint, it looks stunning now!
Before, badly yellowed:

Very cool. I used to really live that pad (particularly for MK), along with HORI and official pads.

Sweet!

Got one of these in my box o snes, might have to dabble at doing the same. How hard was it to get to pieces?

Also what type of paint you use if you don't mind me asking :)

It is pretty simple to take apart but there are a lot of screws so take a few pics so you know where they all go. I used Tamiya Plastic model spray paint which I got from a local model shop for £6.00. Its really good and nice and glossy, really high quality stuff. Make sure you get the one for plastics and not for polycarbonate. I still can't get over how good the purple paint has come out. I have a US snes mini so I thought the purple theme would sit nicely with it and so much better than horrible yellowed plastic :) I was thinking to varnish it but since no other parts rub on the paint and the fact it is covered in the transparent shell can save some time and pennies.
