Retro console and games thread

I'm after a SNES- what is the going rate for an ebay/gumtree working SNES + pads and a couple of games? Only an ordinary PAL snes, nothing special.

Does the SNES use the same video out 'socket' as the N64, and gamecube, and wii...

I would budget £50 for the SNES with one pad and cables only if you want one with no yellowing. If you don't mind them with a bit of decolourisation or think you can get it back to white yourself then I've seen them go for £30.

The av connection fits the NES but not any of the others.

This is incorrect. The NES has RF and Composite Connections. The only Nes system with the same AV socket is the Japanes AV Famicom.

The Snes, N64 and gamecube use the same AV socket but i'm not sure how the gamecube is wired up for RGB if you plan on using a Scart cable. If you plan on just using the 3 plug AV connector then this can be used on all 3.

The Wii is a different socket entirely.

The PAL SNES and GC must be wired the same, my legit Nintendo RGB scart works for both my GC and SNES. Don't know if it works for 64 as i don't have one yet but i dont think the PAL 64 does RGB anyway. I don't see why the same cable wouldn't at least do a composite signal over scart on a 64 as most scart leads do composite as well as RGB anyway, although i guess it depends if it is fully wired or not.

I finally got one last weekend for £50, all cables, one controller, mario kart and mario all stars... was happy with that :)

Thanks for clearing it up Deo_volente. I was unsure because i know some Cables have Caps on the RGB lines but can't remember which ones did hahaha.

What are the alternatives to using an official Nintendo Scart that isn't RF aerial cable? Will a cheapo eBay composite Yellow Red White cable work fine as that doesn't use RGB?

Get yourself a PAL RGB Scart lead off ebay. That will give you the best picture quality. What TV will you be hooking the SNES upto?

The composite will be fine, although not the best quality picture. Retro Gaming Cables sell an RGB scart that should be decent but comes in at a tenner. My Megadrive scart is from them and gives a good signal.

This will be on a 32" LG flatscreen, about a year old, so I was originally hoping that a component (3x video) was released, so I'll get an RGB SCART. I think getting a good deal on the SNES will be harder!

Megadrives seem so much cheaper than SNES'! any idea why that is?

man i used to love this game, i only just found out they did it on the snes (i had a mega drive growing up) paid 5 quid for it of ebay

My bad, just had a look at my Nintendo consoles and you're correct. It must have been the power connector I was thinking of as that is the same on the NES and SNES.

Has anyone bought any unlicensed games for old consoles; not knock offs but games developed years after the console has been discontinued?

I've seen quite a few for the Dreamcast that look good and I'm currently following the progress of It Came From The Desert coming out next year for the MegaDrive.

Just received a box of 9 games for the master system, which I won ebay for £40 something quid, cheap enough as I mainly wanted it for ys. Kinda makes you sick that the sticker on it when it was sold at some point was 7 pounds rather than the £30+ pounds it goes for now.

But that's the way collecting goes!

can I just say... Renegade 1, what a bloody marvellous game it was on the spectrum

I really did try and complete it, I cant remember how many times I managed to get through to the start again (goes faster each time) about 4 or 5 times I think..

I was going to try and get the original, but I prefer the Hit Squad collection myself, smaller tape cases as well

can anyone tell me the sega master system cartridge dimensions are please?

I'm looking for a way to store them and I think I come up with a solution, just need to know if they will fit before I take them all home.

Thanks

Went into a charity shop earlier, was just about to walk out when I seen a boxed Atari jaguar with 3 boxed games and a boxed controller was excited and ready to jump on it until I seen the price.... £175!! And it was untested, I asked if she would take offers but she was fairly bitchy and said I've already dropped it from £250 so I'm not dropping it again. I just don't know where she pulled that price from but It will be sitting there awhile surely it's better to shift it on at a fair price and actually help the charity with the money!
