I acquired a box of old consoles, snes, master system II, saturn, megadrive and a nes, unfortunately just got games & cables for the master system, I am enjoying playing it and have build up quite a collection of games, but what im wondering now is what console to go for next? I could trade some for another console, out of the many old consoles, im looking for something between commodore 64 - ps1 and arguments why? also thinking about the collectible value but am a novice myself

sorry for my spelling/grammar

nintendo 64 ive had mine since when they were released and still play it to this day, infact i was playing worms armmageddon with my housemates this morning

Been collecting retro stuff for a while and this is my conclusion.

Get yourself an original Xbox and large hard drive then install loads of emulators on it, because it's a console with standard pads, plugs in to any tv emulated games will feel right ;)

Most old consoles have little value and can take up lots of room, I myself have a original Xbox (modded), PS2 (fat with hard drive), Saturn (modded) and Dreamcast. Everything else pre these can be emulated very well so I don't bother with them.

Old computers like the Amiga are where it gets exciting and if you want to collect retro then this is where I would concentrate. A console is basically a box with a couple of ports and switches a computer on the other hand is so much more :)

Ps - I won't discuss modding or emulators so don't ask!

i have to say megadrive myself love it you can get an everdrive cart and load the entire megadrive game catalog on to it via sd card its awesome. also got a bios region free saturn has some amazing imports prob one of my fav consoles of all time.

First and foremost collect to enjoy the Consoles and the games they have to offer.

I started collecting for the Saturn as never owned one before and I'm a big fan of Sega Arcades. I also bought all of my Sega Megadrive games that I used to own as a kid. Then it went on from there...!
I would suggest tying to get a classic CRT TV for the slightly older consoles, most of them can be bought very cheaply if not given away.

With regards to value, as pumaz said. Most hold little value especially games which were very popular. However, there are some very expensive games out there which hold their value. A couple of examples are Radiant Silvergun & Mr Bones for the Sega Saturn > Both frequently take £80~100+ on the bay.

Another pointer is that sometimes Ebay is quite overpriced. a lot of people get some bargins through boot sales, forum member markets e.t.c.

I suggest you pick yourself up a copy of Retro Gamer. Its a pretty decent magazine and covers a certain console most months with what to buy and the history e.t.c

Best of luck and enjoy :)
