I would personally just settle on using a xbox 360/xbox one controller for the ease of setting it all up. Might not feel authentic but it gets the job done
You can buy USB versions of plenty of retro controllers for under a tenner. I've got a NES replica USB controller that cost me about £6 and it works fine
