Retro handheld for Neo Geo, CPS2, CPS3 games

Hello everyone,

I am newly registered and happy to join the forum as a contributor.

I am a hobby overclocker but also a dad which limits my time and budget for my hobbies. Before talking about hardware and overclocking elsewhere in the forum, I have a question regarding retro gaming platforms. I am often away from home in the evenings due to work and I am thinking about having a portable platform in my bag to play a bit of retro games.

There are tons of recommendations on the web, but very few mention the platform/games I want to secure which are:

*Neo Geo
Metal Slug 3
Garou: Mark of the Wolves
The Last Blade
Samurai Showdown V Special
Blazing Star
Pulsar
Last Resort

*CPS2
Hyper Street Fighter 2
Marvel vs. Capcom
Marvel vs. Street Fighter
1944 The Loop Master
Progear
Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors
Street Fighter Alpha 3

*CPS3
Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike

Does anyone have any recommendations or experiences to share? Apart from emulation quality, good ergonomics for adult hands and a good screen are welcome.

The Retroid Pocket 4 and 4 Pro has just gone up for pre order, I would look at that. This will play everything you want and more perfectly. It's shipping 15th/20th Jan.

Let's say a maximum of 200GBP including shipping and any necessary accessories.
Regarding the screen, I think not too small would be good, but considering most games will have a 4/3 image, a large 16/9 may not be of much use.
It's not clear to me which is the right hardware base, OS, application, etc. I can tweak the software and hardware if I need to, but I would like to have something that runs games stable.
Honestly, there are new models every month and the market is like a jungle to me.

I think the RG405M is a nice with it's aluminium case but never held one.

Also check out the PowKiddy RK2023 and Ambernic RG405V which are 4:3 and would look nice for what you need

I had the 405m and returned it, the screen had a terrible oversharpening effect which made it look poor quality.

This is fixed in GammaOS which I know you're considering and there are also scripts which resolve it but supposedly can't be undone so I didn't install them as I felt early on this wasn't the system for me and didn't want to have a problem with a return.

For 4:3 systems the screen is a decent size but I didn't like the metal body, it made the device feel premium but too slippery in the hand. I also found the overall small size of the 405m uncomfortable to use after a short while.

The 505 gets decent reviews but I'm a bit done with Anbernic (have an RG35XX too) so would wait for the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro which ships in couple of weeks or a discounted 3+.

After further consolidation, I am currently considering the Powkiddy RGB30. The square screen would be good for vertical shoot'm ups and the software seems relatively mature and supported.
I am holding off a bit due to new device launches, but I must say it is a tempting device.
I keep in touch!
