So,
As a huge fan of the retro space RPG/sim genre (I'm not sure that's what it's actually called... but hey!) I thought I'd make a thread in which we can share games we've found of this style (give brief over-views on if they are worth it).
While some of these games already have threads this is meant to be an over-view (not a replacement for the existing ones).
First on the roll-up we have.
Starsector (Still in development)
http://fractalsoftworks.com/
"Starsector (formerly “Starfarer”) is an in-development open-world single-player space-combat, roleplaying, exploration and economic game."
Currently unavailable on steam, this is a class style ship command game - with top down direct control over the player ship. You can control fleets, trade, attack ships, trade (soon), missions & a pretty in-depth skill, update & combat system.
The combat is excellent & the game has a huge potential to be the lead game of the genre.
Price (£7ish)
Worth a punt? - Most certainly yes, once completed I can see this game taking up huge amounts of my time - over the weekend I ended up spending quite a fair bit of time playing it (despite the limitations).
Currently 8/10 (expect this to rise on release)
Smugglers 5
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=100928089
"Smugglers 5 is the fifth installment in the turn-based single-player space trading game series" This game is a new release on steam, very similar in feel to FTL this game expands some aspects & cuts back others.
While the combat is fun, it's not at the level of FTL, it's trading system is functional (but basic) & has a rough skill tree/update system to add a layer of complexity. It's a quick to get into game, with some nice little features.
Price (£7ish)
Worth a punt? - It's pretty cheap, but nowhere near the best in class - it lacks the class of either Star Sector or FTL.
6/10
(Will be adding FTL, Weird space etc & a few others soon).
