Looking for something retro and turbo for around 3k im handy with a spanner but not with bodywork, a lot of the retro stuff seems to have gone up in price recently though not even sure you can get anything decent for that price these days wasn't long ago 3k would get you a mint anything from the 80's/90's any recommendations?

Starlet Turbo
Uno/punto Turbo - uno is more fun
R5 Turbo or Renault 21 Turbo
Pulsar Turbo
Nova/corsa red top turbo conversion.

Not sure if a MR2 turbo is in that budget..

I think that budget would be pushing it for a RS turbo I doubt it mint.
Calibra........... again probably too much.
Rover Coupe turbo...

£3k will bag you an S2 RS Turbo,it'll be ropey though and forget about an S1 for sure at that budget - you'll need your spanner skills almost certainly mind you, pretty much as you will with most cars of this type from that era.

My money would be on an s13, but you will be lucky to find one that isn't rusty and or abused for that money.

S-body (s14, s13 or even s12)
Mr2 Tubro
Mk3 Supra
Soarer TT (not many out there in budget but there are a few)
Starion

Not much else springs to mind.

Had to google a Starion... want!

*Edit* 2.6l turbo... 145bhp hahaha, that must have taken some work to be so low output

I own a Saab 9-3 1.8t (2.0l remapped), and as such I feel I should advise you to buy anything other than a Saab of any shape or form.

If mine wasn't a convertible (its other redeeming feature apart from a much cooler turbo/induction noise since remapping), I'd have driven it into a tree at high speed long ago, it's that soulless.

MK1 1989-1992 BBR Turbo MX5
or Any MK1 MX5 with a turbo/supercharger conversion.
Cheap to buy. Cheap to fix. Incredibly reliable. Easy to fix. Incredible fun.

You don't go out looking for an MX5, but there is really nothing else with the blend of fun and ease of ownership.
There are loads around and they have not yet gone up in price, but many are rotten and are due to be put down at the next MOT. That said, finding a good one is very easy.

You will get a good MK1 for £1000 this time of year.
£2000 for a minter with a hard top too.

To be fair old Saab's are cool - they look so unassuming yet with minimal fettling will rocket away

But yeah, 9-3's are really, truly terrible cars. It's like an exercise in how to make a Vauxhall worse in every department bar interior

300ZX Z32 TT (post 90s)

Easily one of the best looking cars for the 90s era as well, personally I think it's still stunning!

Don't know what price is like, but the Volvo 480 is a very rare sight these days. Volvo's first ever FWD car.

The MR2 has to be a strong consideration for performance and looks alone, but bear in mind that they are all imports (possible insurance issues), they do bite if driven with a fist of ham, and they aren't the easiest things to work on.

Whoever suggested the Octavia VRS, the first generation Octavia is hardly a "retro" car yet.

All depends on what the OP is looking for.
At this point we are unclear if the car is a daily or a weekend/summer toy.

I know little about the Impreza, but it is going to be more costly to run. It may not be a problem though as we currently just don't know.

Compared to some of the stuff mentioned I'd not have thought a uk Impreza Turbo would be that bad to run.

Generally reliable if a looked after example, not horrendous on fuel when driven normally. Can imagine old turbo models like escorts, mr2s are similar.

Plus parts are still plentiful and cheap enough, not sure how easy parts are for some of the other older stuff.

Old Evo would be nice though, I'll take an Evo III please :)

180/200sx also be quite good.
