Return to Castle Wolfenstein - crashes with blank screen?

I don't think I've tried playing this since upgrading my rig (see sig).

If I start a new game, I'm lucky if I manage to get to the first playable part in the cell where you start, without the game crashing and the monitor going into standby mode.

I'm running the latest Cats and using the Extended Edition Enemy Territory version. Console in RtCW says version 1.32.

Is this a known issue?

All other games run fine, including Quake III Arena (same engine, right?)

Tried patching?

I know the normal version of the game is at 1.41, not to sure about the special with ET.

Patch 1.4 says "Cannot locate an installation" and doesn't patch.

I've looked in the registry and checked the install path, and there's an entry that says it's version 1.41.

RtCW and ET are seperate games with ET being MP only. If all else fails, I would do a fresh install without any mods or patches and see if the game loads correctly.

Might be a driver issue, IIRC later catalysts have some issues with Q3 engine games for instance MOH:AA wouldn't work at all.

I could believe that. Any other advice? Would like to get it working.

I've even done a full reinstall of the OS + drivers:

WinXP SP2
Latest mobo drivers
DirectX 9.0c Nov
Catalyst 8.5

Same thing - screen goes black and monitor turns off, as if refresh rate is out of bounds. The game continues in the background after a stutter.

are you sure you have the patch for RTCW ?
btw as someone already said its 1.41 that you want...if all else fails you can always uninstall and reinstall.

I believe a possible reason why you are getting the black screen and the monitor is going into standby mode because your rtcw config is set to run at a too high resolution or refresh that your monitor cannot support.

go into the rtcw main folder and delete both multi and single player configs to be sure.

Then reload rtcw back up.

Also have you tried using WHQL certified drivers?

as eggnoodle said, soundslike its trying to run in a refresh rate your monitor can't handle.

If deleting to config.cfg and autoexec.cfg files doesn't work, try adding this line to your config.

seta r_displayrefresh "60"

Good luck <3 RTCW!

I deffo say its a driver problem, been playing this game for years and there's been no probs with XP Sp2 Nvidia setup, afaik u can only patch to 1.4/1.41 from version 1.33, It's worth patching anyway just incase.

When and if you gat it stable again, you need to get yourself online for some multiplayer fun. Only a few servers left though :'(

p.s. try running Wolf in safe mode.
