I'd quite like to resume some crunching and SETI is my preference as I used to contribute years ago in the teams early days.

Can some kind soul run me through the latest incarnation and how to get the best from my i7 rig please.

I will read up and I am not totally without a clue but I have not touched anything distributed for years so bare with me.

What would you expect to get out of an [email protected]?

Not as much as you would using Nvidia GPU's.......

As I am sure everyone else would agree - best to download Boinc Softare & Lunatics Unified installer, installBoinc & attach to SETI. Once attached - close Boinc (and cease all work). Run the Lunatics Installer (specific to operating system) - it's pretty easy to do.

If you are using Nvidia GPU's you're output will be a lot higher - it's almost not worth using the CPU nowadays (but every little helps).

Is there anything I can crunch that is more able to utilise my spare CPU cycles?

Folding@Home on bigadv will love an [email protected] will earn you about 30K per day. Which is about the same as 3 GTX460s, you can use the 5850 if you want that will net you about 5K PPD perhaps. But again Nvidia really rules the roost for Seti and Folding@Home at the moment.

There is a BOINC application that will LOVE your 5850 thats called MilkyWay@Home you will get lots of points with a 5850 in that.
