Return to Crysis

Crysis is almost as much of a must-buy as Half Life 2 for a PC Gamer - not because of how the games stack up per se (HL2 = brilliant narrative + very nice graphics, Crysis = brilliant graphics + okay to v.good narrative), but more because of what these games mean to the PC as a gaming option. Not sure if that makes sense.

Warhead is better optimised than the original Crysis. More action-oriented but imo both games are about as good as eachother.

And yes, the GFX are mind-blowing enough to make any console fanboy weep :D

Worth of note is the in game physics in both Crysis games. Very few other games feel as solid.

I remember the first time I launched a rocket at a guard tower. I was excpecting an explosion and the tower to remain standing, as happens in every other PC game of the time and was thrilled when the whole thing disintegrated and collapsed into a flaming pile of debris. :D

Kinda disagree. It's a must have because it has a good narrative? Um okay? Doesn't really make sense. Probably because I'm an older gamer (i.e. started on a Binotone and then Atari 2600, etc.) I can see past all of the fancy graphics and cut scenes.

It was a very, very average game. I completed it and I won't be going back. I'm not one of these people who thinks a game is better because the graphics are nice - I'd prefer solid gameplay.

The most fun I had after I finished the game was replaying parts of it in the editor after inserting a gigantic tornado into the level with the railroad leading to the Quarry.
If you alter the parameter settings to increase the height and circumference it will whip up all the Koreans, collapsible buildings and vehicles, trees etc. high into the sky and as the tornado moves on the tanks etc will all come crashing down and explode.
Also had fun by selecting the nuke firing tank :D

BFBC2 uses a different technique, not using physics. The buildings are designed with blow-out sections on a fixed shell framework. Once a certain percentage of the building's components have been destroyed it plays an animation of the building collapsing. Works really well though. very satisfying in multiplayer to blow a hole in a wall next to a camping sniper.

Crysis made all their shanty towns and watch towers out of physics objects, which is why they disintegrate so well.

Sorry, I think you misunderstood my point. Crysis is a must-play because if nothing else, it is an astounding technological feat:

- It is the de-facto bar for high-end graphics
- A very unique combination of physics and DIY gameplay in a fairly large sandbox
- The Engine powering it is capable of astonishing effects

Graphics, innovative gameplay, Engine - these are the things that define what we want as PC gamers. New experiences, not to be had on the dinky consoles.

We demand the best of breed from all other options. 3 years ago, in an industry where these things are traditionally made redundant every half-year or so, this game is still a stunning revelation for those who have not experienced it in all its glory.

If you take the view of a crusty, hardcore, old-school gamer chap then yes, you will scoff at the gameplay experience. If you take the view of a PC gaming fan who wants to show the best of what the platform can offer (and I already mentioned that the gameplay is outshone by the technical aspect, and this was adressed in Warhead to some extent), then this is just one of those 'must-have' type games. IMO ofc.

metro 2033 has better grapgics than cryis ;)

im suprised my 460 1gb runs both crysis warhead and metro maxed out with no AA smoothly :D

At what resolution? My monitor is 1080p, I also have a GTX460 1Gb, and neither game runs anywhere near smoothly at full settings.

I thought the gameplay was excellent (well until the aliens arrived). It has a level of freedom that's unmatched by most FPS's out there. You're given an objective and some optional objectives and you're free to do whatever you want to achieve them.

Want to stealth your way through, not killing anyone? You can.
Charge in with all guns blazing? Yep.
Drive a vehicle and kamikazi it into the objective at the last minute, or snipe from a distance, or swim underwater to hide from enemies, etc.

I really don't get the complaints that the gameplay was mediocre. the COD games are very poor by comparison.

Anyone recall any other game that really makes the most of the PC's power since Crysis?
I got Metro 2033 recently, and while its a great game, the small environments make it very console portish.
