Return your Insurance Certificate

I sold one of my bikes last week and cancelled the insurance policy I had for it. However, I was rather perplexed to receive a notice from my previous insurer stating that I return the Insurance Certificate (or declare it lost). Why is this perplexing I hear you ask? Well, they never sent me a physical copy, only an electronic copy. So are they wanting me to print it out, and send it back? Seems a bit pointless really. I understand this is to do with the Road Traffic Act, but when the certificate is an electronic file, seems pointless returning it.

As an aside, I'm still awaiting for my previous insurer to send my NCB certificate to me. They were suppose to send it with the letter regarding returning the form, and despite me requesting they do so, they didn't . Having requested it again, it should be here in 2-5 working days (they wouldn't email it). I require this as I'd like to send it to my new insurer. I'm starting to wonder, can I send my new insurer a copy of my insurance certificate as proof of NCB? I ask as I'm suppose to provide my present insurer with this information by Wednesday, and with my previous insurer taking their time at sending it out, I don't see how I can get it to the new insurer on time.

I would request the certificate to copy and send back.

They sent you an official notice to return a void certificate under the road traffic act?

The cert doesn't contain any NCB details so won't be accepted as proof of bonus.

Some insurers don't ask for the cert & some do, I'd ring them advising if they didn't issue you with a paper copy, to reduce their own costs, the least they can do is just cancel without you having to provide the cert. If they're unable to do this then ask them for a lost/stolen cert declaration form, then sign & return that.

In either case issuing proof of ncb is usually done right at the end, after the policy is cancelled & there are no more outstanding docs or premiums, even then they don't usually bother to send this unless prompted by the PH.

Get the cert issue sorted then ask for POB a few days later, if your new company are hassling you for it they can always call your last company for verbal confirmation.

Good idea. I'll give my previous insurer a call and sort out this cert business, and then ring my new insurer and let them know I'm awaiting the certificate of NCB.

As an aside, I had a quick scan through the policy booklet and documents, and all it states is that proof of NCB must be supplied within 10 days. However, the documentation appears silent on what will happen if you go over this 10 day period. Has anyone submitted documents late? Having 8 years NCB, I'm perhaps being a little paranoid about losing them.
