Returning a DVD Recorder-what are my rights?

Hello,
I recently purchased an LG RH7500 DVD recorder from a company that advertise in the UK but are a dutch company.
I plugged it in and found out that you couldn't fast forward or rewind divx movies and i phoned them up asking for a refund under the distance selling regulations. They gave me an RMA number and i sent it back in all the original packaging the same day.
I phoned them today and they told me that they were not going to refund me the total cost only 75% because the item had been used and they could no longer sell it as new.
What are my rights here - am i entitled to a full refund or should i just accept the fact that i am not going to get a full refund?

Thanks for the info dave. Very useful. Looks like because i didn't restore the default settings after tuning in the dvdr, it has been deemed that i have personalised the item therefore falling into the non-refundable category.
Since i haven't found a dvd recorder that meets my exacting requirements in more ways than this one, i have asked the retailer to return it to me.
Oh well, lesson learned. Will do some more research into my purchases in future.

Just for confirmation, i contacted Consumer Direct (info from one of your links Dave) and was told that under the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations Act 2000, i am permitted to open the box and test the product and still get a full refund if i return it within 7 days.
After many argumentative emails with the trader who was sticking to his guns on only giving a 75% refund as it had been used, i took consumer direct's advice and sent them a recorded letter stating that if i didn't receive a refund within 7 days (although the law states 30 days) i shall be commencing legal proceedings.
Hey presto, got a full refund this morning!

Good on Consumer Direct, they are extremely helpful.
