bought some minced beef from my local tesco store and it appears to have gone off well before the expiry date. :(

can i return it to any tesco store or will it have to be the actual store i purchased it from?

i also intend to return a further package of the same meat which i put in the freezer.

no chile concarne tonight!

I used to work at Waitrose, and they never let you get a refund or exchange for chilled goods.

For all they know, you could have left the meat out and it's gone off because of that.

That was Waitrose, i don't know about Tesco's policy.

Tesco will take it back even if you're unhappy with it for whatever reason - though generally give you a store voucher.

I have had to return a chicken in the past as it had gone off 3 days before the use by date & 2 before sell by date. Thought it would be simple case of showing the reciept & smelly chicken and getting another. Got given one of the most interesting excuses I have heard for some time. Apparantly the dates are for industrial fridges and not home fridges and wont last aslong @ home. Strange considering that my fridge will chill just as well as those in store. Managed to get an exchange after having a moan.

When ever ive had a problem i got my money back and an exchange item. I thought that was standard policy. Maybe i just have a sweet face...

Tesco usually have no problems in taking back returns. Worst case they will give you credit note.

Just walk in and say 'excuse me, this meat has gone off before its sell by date for some reason. Any chance I can change it please?' and they'll do it no problem.

The response you get from any shop clerk will depend massively on how you are with them.

This reminded me of something interesting happening to me while working on a sunday bank holiday so the store was closed.
A customer knocking at the staff entrance a workmate opened up and the guy was looking for a manager.
He was complaining about the meat he bought the day earlier, my manager rang store manager and off he went with a new set of meat.
Not sure what it was.
Some customer goes to extreme with these kind of things lmao.

They'll take it back no questions asked.

But has it actually gone off.

well i prodded it around a bit more...had another sniff

chucked it in the pan :)

chilli con carne back on! though it did produce not the most pleasant smell cooking - i have had much better quality in the past from tesco but i suppose it is a gamble with supermarket meat

was tesco lean steak mince 2 x 500g for £5.00

i hope you dont end up being ill or you will need to re-visit tesco for loo roll!

And they have no idea how long it took you to get it home & into the fridge/freezer...in that very hot boot of your car. ( or whether your fridge was at the right temp or not left open overnight)

I once made a long trek to an Asda - over an hours drive from my house..... on a very hot summers day (to save a bit of money funnily enough). We bought our shopping - then sat for about 40 minutes getting something to eat with the bags next to us......we then drove home in 34 degree heat (which took about an hour).....By the time I got home with the shopping everything was pretty much boiling in the boot. Unfortunately when we came to use some of the stuff over the next few days, nearly all the meat products were smelling a bit funky well before their use by dates / and most of the coleslaw and salad stuff was off a lot earlier than usual.

But Tesco should replace anything you are unhappy with.

It's odd you should say that - exactly the same happened to me with Tesco mince a few days ago. Again, well within it's use by date.

Been buying it for years without a problem, but when I opened this one it didnt smell right - thinking it was just me when I started to cook it it gave off a really pungent acidic smell. I tried the second pack I bought and that was the same.

Both ended up in the bin.

Mince always smells rank when cooking it i think.

With regards to meat products, say if we switch supplier or date, it is very hard to keep the two separate with the sheer speed everyone is working at, so on the odd rare occasion you may have got meat at a slightly different date.

It's no big deal just send it back, they should be pretty cool about it.
