Hi guys,

I have had issues with this laptop from the start which I have tried to correct and have now decided to return it to Amazon where I bought it from. The options are now to either get a replacement or go for another laptop. I have been looking at both the GT73VR 6RE with the 120hz screen or the Aorus X5 V6-CF2 which is probably more suited for me as it is smaller and I do travelling.

Can anybody help me out with this and what are the pro's and con's of each, I could replace the model I have but I may just get another 'lemon' and I do miss high refresh if I am honest.

Thanks,
Tom

This is what I know. Obviously the below comments are purely my opinion and formed from information gathered reading extensive reviews both user and professional.

I believe both laptops have a great deal to offer. Firstly with regards to specification, the MSI comes with 32GB ram and 512GB SSD compared to the 16GB and 256GB SSD in the Aorus. Screens are both FHD 120HZ and G-SYNC enabled. Size and weight, the MSI is 17" and the Aorus is 15" so naturally the later will be lighter and smaller. Saying that the reason I have a laptop instead of a tower is for the mobility factor and I have never found myself regretting my decision to go for the 17" MSI.

Thermal performance and noise, this is where a winner is abundantly clear. The MSI due to its larger frame has much better cooling and in therefor produces less noise when fans ramp up to keep the top end components cool. This was the main influence for me to choose the MSI over anything else and I can confirm temps during extended gaming sessions are some of the best I've seen from mobile gaming solutions. Although it may be isolated incidents but the Aorus runs uncomfortably hot (sometimes throttles) and has been reported to be one of the loudest laptops when the fans are trying hard.

Performance wise, they will both offer the same experience.

Manufacturer warranty/support, both laptops are made by big players so you wont have much trouble dealing with either.

Cheers Damian, I am willing to go 17" even though it may be a little big but should be okay, even though I noticed the Titan is quite chunky. Is the panel IPS or TN as MSI advertise it as IPS-level which is false advertisement as that is another way of calling it TN right?

Glad you pointed out the Aorus running quite hot as I have heard about that before, I believe it is because the chassis's are quite small compared to the MSI. Cooling has a big part to play within choosing the right machine.

As an owner of the Aorus X5 V6-CF2 and an owner of a MSI GT72 I'll add my tuppence worth.

The Aorus is a beautiful and capable machine. The screen is outstanding. Yes it runs a warm but the cooling deals with it well enough. The noise when gaming may be slightly louder than when gaming on the MSI but not by a great deal, considering the form factor difference this is somewhat of an achievement.

My AORUS beats quite a lot of the MSI GT73VR in firestrike too :)

The only thing I prefer on the MSI is the IPS screen when not gaming.

Hope that helps, feel free to ask me any questions you have.

Thanks Misjah, it's going to be hard deciding but I will look around for the best deal. What I like about the Aorus is that it is 15" and slimmer so will be easier to move around but like you said the MSI is bigger due to the extra cooling and function itself. I am willing to sacrifice a little mobility for a better laptop however.

How are the 120hz panels on these laptops anyway? I have heard that the Aorus screens have issues or have they been corrected now? I'm guessing the Aorus panel is TN aswell?

Tom

Yes it's a TN panel. No issues, I think that only affected the 17" 2K screens.

Oh and the screen is great for gaming.

I have the GT62 with G-sync and 60hz and I love it :)

I looked at the 17" but it was waaaaay too thick for me.

Don't get me wrong the GT62 was awesome, it was just the defect that I can't put up with. To be fair I do miss high refresh rates but that is only because I have played on my desktop that is a 144hz. If it wasnt for my desktop monitor I would have been more satisfied with 60hz, glad you are loving yours though bud!! ;)

I have the GT73VR 6RF with the 1080, haven't had a problem with it :)
Great laptop and ofc played everything at max.
Fans can be loud in sports/turbo mode if you intend to play in the living room might get on ppl's nerves

Cheers for the response guys, I went ahead with the GT73VR 6RE with the i7 6820k and GTX1070. Let's just hope I don't get a lemon again hahaa

It's dumb isn't it, I'm excited to get it but at the same time anxious as I don't know if it's going to play up. If it does then it's the Aorus next time for me but just hope it's all good.

There's just one issue I'd face... an extra £100 gets you a GTX 1080 model albeit with less ram, SSD space and a weaker i7.... hmmm
