Hi,

Returning to Folding@Home and just downloaded the GUI client.

I have a quad-core processor so is there a way I can use all 4 cores or do I just use one?

P.S. There was another program you had to login to with a username and password and the login was down most of the time. Anyone remember what it was called it wasn't the best looking website if that helps.

I'm using two WinSMP clients on my quad though you can get more points by going the VMware + Linux client route under windows. If you're not up for too much messing around then you could set up 4 (or even 5 if you want a spare) standard single-core clients and that would be using all your cores to maximum effect.
 
I've just run the SMP client (text version) which seems to be using all 4 cores - is this correct?

I set it to use 100% of the CPU (just to test it) and it seems like it is doing just that.

One question I have - I don't mind it using all of my CPU - but if I want to do something else - does it then reduce it's demands as I want to run it as a service.

It runs at lower priority so it will only want to consume clock cycles not requested by any other process. It does, however, use a lot of RAM and memory bandwidth so if you're just generally using the computer you won't notice. If you want to do something intensive like gaming, heavy image processing, or video rendering, you'll probably want to stop FAH and restart it again when you're done.
 
Just remembered.

I also had a computer doing the Ligand Fit thing (think it used to be grid.org) whatever happened to that? Wouldn't mind continuing with that project if possible as I had quite a few points!

run 2 win smp clients to fully maximise your output on the quad.

Personally i just leave it running all the time even when gaming cause it will only use the spare cpu cycles etc - i never shut it down ever for 2/3hour gaming sessions etc
