Rev counter not reading correctly.

Hi guys just wondered if you could give me some advice. Recently at random (it seems) times my rev counter has been overreading a lot.

I could one minute be sat in 6th gear at 60 at 2.5k rpm, then look down and its at 5k rpm. If i accelerate it goes up and decelerate it goes down. The engine speed remains the same but the rev counter overeads. They way i stop it now is to pull over and switch the engine/igniton off, it then sits there at just below 3000 rpm and eventually creeps back down (erratically).

Does anyone know what might be causing this?

You paid through the nose for a new car, take advantage of the fact it's under warranty and anything wrong with it is your dealers problem.
