Rev counter trouble

Just had a new clutch fitted on my xantia and on the way home notice that the rev counter is all the way round past 8000 resting on the bottom of the dash.

Phoned the garage straight away but apparently it was like that when i took it to them, but they can fix it for me but its" gonaa cos".

So What do i start looking for to fix it? could have an idiot over revved it and got the needle stuck or have they forgotton to plug something back in? My thinking would say the needle would stay at zero if they hadn't plugged something in or a dirty contact.

If it wasn't like that when you gave it to them, insist they fix it, the damage was clearly done when they were working on the clutch

After being told it was like it when i brought it in i lost my rag. Guy said it was nothing to do with them, they had not gone anywhere near what would cause it to fail but they would get someone impartial to look at it. If it was a general fault i would have to pay for it but if it was something they did they would pay for it. I said it would be fairer if i took it to Citroen dealer and did the same thing but they weren't prepared to do that. I think there is as much chance of them finding themselves at fault as finding a chicken with teeth and i'm not paying them to fix something they have broken.
I'll probably end up with a handful of sand put in the oil filler as well, i never realised how bad this garage was.

Tried bashing it but nothing. It looks like it is powered so its all the way around. I guess disconnecting the battery would show up if its shorting.

Where is the rpm pick-up likely to be on a citroen ?

Lol - I don't think it's someone revving it, although with french electrics you never know :)
Well it was

Took the dash out today and gave the clocks a bash from the bottom which freed it. Looks as if someone has down-shifted so hard the needle has spun round to what would have been about 10,000 rpm and jammed on the clock surround.
Great garage, absolutely p*****d, i paid them to treat my car like that.

oh is it a xantia? I care even less now.

Excuse me for living within my means. I'll just pop down to the local showrooms and get myself in £30000 worth of debt to please you shall I !!

Just out of interest does your car resemble something like this?
