Evening,

I’m looking to pick up a reversing camera for my folks for Christmas - for their camper van, as they’ve already reversed into something with it :o

With a budget of £150ish, what’s out there? Any good experiences? Anything to avoid?

Thanks in advance :)

Saw a very clever setup in Halfrauds the other day that basically replaces the rear view mirror to one that doubles up as a camera monitor, don’t recall the price though probably double your budget at least knowing those clowns. :p

Edit £129! - https://www.halfords.com/technology/reversing-cameras/reversing-cameras/echomaster-mirror-and-reversing-camera-kit?istCompanyId=b8708c57-7a02-4cf6-b2c0-dc36b54a327e&istItemId=-xwwarwlmpl&istBid=t&_$ja=tsid:94971|cid:868641084|agid:51345797686|tid:pla-417254500279|crid:253980555971|nw:g|rnd:5205153146763612172|dvc:m|adp:1o1|mt:|loc:9046443&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIy-bll6TO3gIVR_lRCh24DwD4EAQYASABEgIB-fD_BwE

A few quid for fitting - they charge £75 but a: I wouldn’t let them touch my car and b: a competent automotive sparkle will probably charge less and do a better job -you should be more or less in budget.

That's not bad! I'll pop into Halford's and take a look! Cheers!
Let me know what you think - if indeed you opt for it - I’m thinking of a similar thing for my old man, he’s 80 and nowhere near as good at parking as he once was (despite parking sensors!!) maybe such a camera would help him....

No worries, there are a lot of other solutions online for a similar sort of price, so getting hands on with one would allow me to take a proper look. The only downside I can think of is that the screen itself is quite small; a separate, larger screen may be more suitable.

In fact, I'm not even sure that my parent's camper van HAS a rear view mirror... :o

If they have a double din head unit already then you can install a camera for about £20

I have a double din head unit and put a camera on it - I do find the lines are a bit too high - I was in a Merc once with rear camera and they were much lower and flatter -- it seemed to make it easier to follow the lines when reversing.

That is a product of the camera placement as the lines are an overlay on the HU

So if I had mounted camera pointing down a bit the lines would also be lower ? I put it in center of rear bumper.

yup that.. I installed one on my previous car and adjusted the camera so the lines looked "on the road" if that makes sense.

Yes - makes perfect sense - Now I understand why VW Passat's camera in badge on boot lid points down. -- :)
