Review my portfolio

To show your work seems perfect, Shows off the work well.

Maybe remove the Search from the menu, Don't think that is really needed on a site like this.

I take it this is mainly to show to potential clients in the future and friends? Or you trying to get ranked in google?

Thanks. Yeah it's mainly as a demonstration of my work to show people, both photographic and web related.

You want feedback on the website or the photos?

Bit of both, if you don't mind. :)

A lot of the photos of the animals have weak composition and framing.

The horse really needs some space to be comfortable

Conversely, this really needs to be in portrait orientation. The right side is dead and clipping the ears off is awkward. The light is also a little harsh. PS, dust spot on sensor on the left.

This composition works a little better:

See how the head is well framed and the horse looks to the right where there is some space. It in general makes for a more comfortable composition if an animal/person is looking into space in a photo, or if moving is moving into the space (not about to move off the frame). The downside is the horse jacket is very dirty which is distracting.

This photo partially shows hot it helps to have space for the animal to look into, the dog looks to the right where there is space. However, the dog is also looking up while the space is below him. If the bottom was more cropped and there was mroe space higher up then there could be a stronger composition with a leading line following the back of the dog, along the neck, across the diagonal created by both eye, and then into the space where the dog is looking. Focis looks good on his eye

Bingo, see how it just feels more lanced and natural. Pity the eye doesn't have focus. Really hard to nail the focus with shallow DoF but it is important. The area of sharpest focus is where the viewer will spend the most time looking and our brain will subconsciously pay the most attention to. For people and anaimls this wants to be the eye closest to the camera.

Should have been portrait orientation to emphasize bars and get rid of distracting dead space to the edges.

But I love this one:

Very 3D feel to it, looks like he will pop out of the monitor to get his snout patted!

Thanks. How do I tell when and how much space to give a subject in a photograph, ie. when to do a tight crop and when not to?

I can definitely adjust the crop on that dog one because some of the top is cropped off.
