Gents,

I've used cheap LED strips from eBay for as long as I can remember and they've always done the job. The last one I bought doesn't seem to save the lighting colour once the USB is powered down (connected to my PC) - I don't want the lights being on at night so do not want PC to keep USB powered on.

Has anyone experienced this? I have the same kit on another machine and that works fine. I'm guessing a dodgy unit? It took me ages getting it stuck where I wanted so I hope the lights can stay and the control unit just be replaced?

Thanks,

Turns out the the kit I bought doesn't save the last colour config you choose, so it looks like I need a new sensor. Can anyone recommend a kit so I can buy that and just use the IR sensor included, I don't want to redo the sticking of the strip!

I did the same as you near enough. I got a strip of 12v WS2811 Addressable RGB LED's along with an LED2017-RF-21 Key controller with remote.

Because they're 12v, I was able to get a Molex to 12v Barrel cable so the power was supplied by the PSU and therefore didn't need external power or a USB port.

Well mine are external as they sit behind my monitors so I need usb. The key controller is the problem as it doesn’t remember the last colour setting before turning off. Presumably when you power off tour pc the LEDS go off? When you turn your pc back on does it revert back to the last colour setting you chose? If so could you show me what you bought and I’ll get the same. Thanks!

Ahh I'm sorry, I didn't read the OP properly, I wrongly assumed they were going inside the computer case :p

Yeah when I shut the PC down, the lights turn off and go back to the same effect they had. I've not had much joy with USB powered ones in the past, the ones on my Dell monitor seem to stay alive unless you manually power down the monitor via the button.

This is the exact strip I've had for the last year or two:

and this is the controller it uses, you can probably get it cheaper with a little searching:

HTH :)

Cheers.

The amount of sellers I’ve emailed asking if their RGB kit saves the last colour setting is ridic and it’s all no it doesn’t. I don’t understand why the kit on my wife’s machine saves her chosen purple colour.

Its bizarre. I can’t find the kit that I bought for her annoyingly!
