I'm looking at the possibility of expanding my skill set and contemplating swatting up for the RHCE exams.. has anyone taken them and is there any real point if I don't have physical experience?

My career background is mainly programming, currently it's .NET/C# programming (with PHP/VB etc thrown in) but I have a good grounding on Windows/SQL and Unix servers in a production environment over the past seven or eight years as part of my job. I have been using Linux since RH6.2 days and looking at a few example questions for the RHCE exams I seem to know a fair amount of stuff so I'm confident with the appropriate level of study I'll be able to pass.

But will that be of any use in the marketplace if I don't have the actual experience?

I'm a certified RHCSS.

Probably the best way to guage what kind of stuff is going to be on the course you want is to take the self assesment test on their website, and it will suggest a relevant course for you, and possibly highlight some gaps in knowledge you maybe need to brush up on.
