Apparently a dish titled Rice and Peas shouldn't actually contain peas......If it is served with jerk chicken that is.

I am becoming more and more dismayed at the way this country is heading. How is this even news? I don't know. Based on the article I see no reason for anyone to be offended or insulted. My gosh if I thought like these people do whilst I was working in China and eating their versions of Mexican, Indian etc I'd have had a mental break down!

It has to stop......but how?
 
Hmm, the actual event contained in the article is pretty accurate in terms of how wrong organisers got it. Plenty of dishes have inaccurate names. Food is a big part of culture. People have strong feelings.

Whether it's worth a debate and offense though, is highly dependent on context. Which we don't really have. Most likely it should have been laughed off as a **** attempt at the cuisine, than offensive.
 
Problem is all of this neo-liberalism going on is going to cause the exact opposite of what they are trying to achieve.

Never have I ever felt more under treat as a 35 year old straight white guy than now and I have never seen race/sex/cultures as a problem before.

Its very odd.

You feel under threat because somebody got upset that a food stall used garden peas in a Jamaican dish?
 
Bit odd they didn't use beans, I thihad got it was common knowledge.

Then again it's hardly a new thing for food to be changed, like "Indian" and "Chinese" food in the UK, or perhaps thinking McDonalds represents "American cuisine".
 
The problem with peas is that they're green and that might offend green people(aka aliens). Also it has the letter p which is 7 letters behind the letter w in the alphabet. 7 being the 7 deadly sins and w standing for white supremacist.

That's exactly the point and completely tangential to this thread: As a white man you've never had a problem or felt threatened, now that non-white non-male people are becoming more vocal you do. Nothing to do with rice and peas though :)
 
I live with a Spanish woman and every time I have Paella she tells me it's not really a Paella and pretty much everything sold as Paella in the UK isn't

Do you then tell her that if we didn't misappropriate simulcrams of other nations food we'd all be living off potato and gruel?

Don't get me wrong, i love Oliver as much as the next guy but we've been doing curry wrong for generations and i don't care as long as i'm allowed to stuff my face with it.
