Some people believe feeding birds with dry grains, such as rice, barley or wheat, the seeds would expand in volume in birds' stomachs and cause them to explode (some people throw birdseed at weddings instead due to concern about the fate of birds eating rice). This is not true. Many species eat such grains frequently; the bobolink, for example, lives primarily off rice.

Edit: As long as these Google results I have pulled up aren't yanking my chain, it would appear as though pigeons can become bloated and die as a result of rice ingestion. This is supposedly due to the rice grains reacting with acid in the stomach, causing them to rapidly expand and place increased pressure on the bird's internal organs.

It wouldn't cause a visible explosion, though, that's for sure.

it's actually yeast not rice. The yeast ferments in their bellys and they 'supposedly' explode, i personally have never seen it or done it though so cannot warrant wether it's true or not.

During World War II, noted American behaviorist B.F. Skinner received $25,000 in government funding for Project Pigeon, the development of a pigeon-guided missile.

Quality.

its similar to the rumour that if you push a cow over its stomachs acids can mix and blow it up

the bird will probly die but i doubt it will explode

I always heard it was with chips with vinegar on - dip a chip with vinegar on it into some bicarb, and feed the bird.

bread and crushed alka selzer does the trick, esp with greedy gulls, crush up the tablets, tear a bit of bread without crust, make a parcell like ravioli and chuck it in the air for them

The vinegar is only acting as an acid in that situation and thus making the bicarb give off CO2, the birds stomach acid should in theory do the same, except without wasting it by reacting before the bird eats it ;)

I doubt he has because I don't think it works :p

URBAN~ MYTH

Rice - supposedly they explode as the rice expands - but rice only expands to the same volume as the water it's put in or not even that much

Alka Seltzer - supposedly pigeons can't burp or fart so they swell up and explode. hmmm I think not. You'd have to put a lot of compressed gas into a bird for it to physically rip apart flesh. Their exit whole would give before that. And it would have to be more than 1 or 2 alka seltzer. by the time they'd felt a fizzing off the first bite they'd be too scared to eat.

I have fed a seagull a nice bit of BK bun with a couple of jalapeno peppers in it and it wolfed it down in a one-er.

Wouldnt like to be underneath it when it emptied its bowels lol
