This is alnmost so stupid it's funny, but I'm at a dead loss and growing ever more frustrated here
First off a basic overview of how my network is setup-
Cable Modem==> Router (WRT54GS, Tomato)==> Upstairs hub (5 ports, routes to bedrooms/ loft)==> Downstairs hub (5 ports, routes to consoles, PC etc)

I'm having riduculous issues with the connection to the downstairs hub. This connection has been working perfectly for 9 months, nothing changed anywhere. A few days ago (Can't give a precise date), I started seeing some packet loss from the PC; I put this down to a dodgy hub & accordingly picked up a replacement.
This afternoon I swapped out the downstairs hub & instantly killed all connection to the network. Accordingly, it ought to have been a simple case of replacing the original hub & looking elsewhere for the issues  Putting back in the original hub did absolutely nothing, so I then swapped the upstairs hub for the replacement. This still gave no connection downstairs. (All the appropriate lights are on, but nothing seems to be getting through)

Taking the laptop upstairs and using any one of the three hubs I have produces a perfect connection.
Taking the laptop and plugging into the cable running from the upstairs hub down again gives a perfect connection.
Using any hub downstairs produces a total connection failure.

I've tried the obvious and disconnected all other cables than the links between the hubs & the final connection to the laptop, but nothing happens.

Thoughts please :)

Im guessing a faulty connection between your downstairs "hub" and the router, could be the cable, could be the port on the router.

Would anyone care to give me the odds on three switches, one brand-new (Had been in the drawer for 6 months) going to pot at the same time?

I can't cope
Anyone care to reccomend a decent brand of switch for 24/7 operations? I've tried cheap & nasty brands; life on these ranges from 3- 12 months, Netgear (2 months), Belkin (Dodgy, but not dead on arrival).

The sockets are fine as far as I know, they've got plenty of other stuff running off them, none of which has ever died. Power supplies wise, each hub comes with its own, can only assume these work.
Cables are fine again as far as I can test (Network cable tester, 200x ping packetloss test between laptop & router)

Just seems to be ridiculous cheap electronics dying at the drop of a hat.

Trouble is, there's no real middle ground :(
I need 5-8 port switches that can easily be stuck in a corner or screwed to the wall. I can either have cheap stuff (Netgear/ Belkin/ No brand stuff), or I'm looking at enterprise level rackmount gear, which I have neither the money or the space for.

Over the last three years, this is my total networking gear killed-
4x no-brand switches. (Lifetime is very variable)
2x Netgear switches. (Lasted about 6 months each)
1x Belkin switch (Very dodgy on arrival)

24/7 running really isn't good for these :p

Cheers
