why is there such a mark up on older memory?

i have an older board that takes skt 939 and ddr and to buy a decent 2gb kit would cost me near on £80 but yet for ddr2 i can buy 4gb kit for £10 cheaper.
i only need another 2gb as im running 2gb with vista 64bit and would like to go to 4gb, but £80 is a good chunk out of my pocket when it could easy go towards new setup with ddr2.
anyone else feel cheated like this ?

It's not really made any more, so it's in short supply.

There's a pretty big second-hand market in it tho.

ive been looking on the s/h market and around fleabay!
not much out there with decent memory and there is its near the price i would buy from oc or else where.

suppose my real question is .......~IS THIS REALLY TIME TO UPGRADE?????
bite the bullet and go for it (once the baby is born end of april that is !!!!)

some of the best 1gb sticks were the crucial balistix, but they suffer from high failure and the later sticks are performing gradually worse -

early 5b-d sticks, 300 3-3-3-8 within reach
early 5b-f sticks, 280 3-3-3-8 with some luck
early lead free 5b-f, 260-270 3-3-3-8 if your lucky

(all the above with very tight sub timings)

recent revised heatspreader 5b-f, 250 3-3-3-8 if your REALLY lucky, and with comparitively very poor sub timings.

this is pushing the price on older stick up fast, but you take a big gamble.
If i were you, id try and get some early 512mb 5b-g based ballistix/ocz eb (i think it was) as these are not plagued with failure and are very very fast. and 3gb should give some boost and save some cash - but i think you should think hard about moving to a new system if its starting to feel slow.

I wouldnt bother.

I'd also downgrade to Vista32 (if its not too much hastle), as it would use less of your 2GB memory than the 64bit version does.

as supply falls from S1 to S2 as production is reduced, demand falls from D1 to D2 as many people and firms start to use DDR2.

because the fall in supply is larger than the fall in demand the price rises from P1 to P2 as output of DDR falls from Y1 to Y2

Yes it's time for an upgrade ;)

The relative cheapness of DDR2 makes moving to a S775 setup the most viable option IMO. Shelling out a lot on DDR is a bit of a waste because when you do finally get around to upgrading mobo/cpu, it'll be useless.

Now, some people may try and argue that the same is true of buying a DDR2 setup now (i.e. DDR3 will eventually take over). But if you look at the prices, in all likelihood it will work out cheaper to buy BOTH DDR2 now, and DDR3 in the future, rather than simply jumping straight to DDR3 now. I.e. the price of DDR3 will like drop by more than the cost of a current DDR2 kit!
