Is an FN P90 a suitable weapon for a sentry guard? Was having a discussion at lunch today (I know, random), but I don't think it is - even despite the piercing characteristics of the round. It's a PDW, not even a full sub-machine gun.... Surely a normal rifle would make much more sense? Otherwise a simple AK wielder could just pick you off (their 500m+ to your 200m range). I know it is used by a lot of SWAT and MP, but then the weight and size are much more advantageous.

Or am I being dumb?

The average sentry guard isn't on the look out for snipers, nor are they trained to deal with them. PDWs are a good choice since they're aimed at close range encounters, and have much lower penetration characteristics should any rounds go astray.

Horses for courses really, depends if you feel you're at risk from a skilled sniper!

Wasn't even talking about a sniper - as you're screwed even if you have a .5 cal machine gun. But, an SA80 can lay down accurate (albeit weak) fire from 650m away. An SLR can match that distance with power.

I was just thinking out loud. Some pistols have a comparable range to the P90, so it just seemed interesting. I suppose it makes sense for incoming vehicles and so on.

I would have thought a carbine would be a more sensible option. Smaller profile for close quarters, yet a round that is capable at a reasonable range.

G36C, M4A1 etc

Indeed, I'd said AR-15 or M4A1 as it gives you both options should the be needed.

Mod Plod here now use the MP7, which has a similarly weak range. So I guess I'm in the wrong. Although that was solely brought in as a cost saving exercise (to replace Browning/SA80/MP5 and their training).

AUG HBAR would be a good choice short bullpup rifle so its easy to carry and shoot with and it will put some serious power down on the enemy. but the RPG is a damn good choice, ain't no one gonna walk away from one of them things

For a sentry (depending on surroundings, nearby civi's etc) I'd go for an AR-15 or an HK53.

I'm leaning more towards the HK53

A gate guard will need a short range weapon. A PDW is better than a pistol (fire power wise) and better than pistol/SMG (penetration). A gate guard's primary threat will be measured in FEET, not yards, not miles, FEET. Sometimes less than 10 feet away. You wouldn't want to **** about with a large, unwieldy rifle such as an SLR at those distances. You need something compact and quick to bring to bear.

Someone overlooking and guarding, say, a street or a small valley would be better off with a weapon that can be deployed, utilized in a sustained fire role, and put down a 'beaten zone' at x-hundred yards away to form a kill zone. This is obviously going to be something belt-fed, such as a GPMG.

Someone in a 'guard tower' may have some kind of precision rifle, either bolt action or semi automatic. Most likely in 7.62 or equivalent.

So, i guess the answer is "it depends". If I was guarding a base, and my job was gate guard, something small+light would be my choice.

Gate guards are simply there as a deterrant, they are not there for sustained defensive duties. It does not matter what weapon they use. Under sustained assault, unless they have some armor protection, they are going down and quickly.
Gate guards on British bases use the LA85 as it is the standard issue personal weapon. (They dont actually have a choice of weapon)

Ive done gate duty in the uk . we had a pick elf (the wooden part of a pick axe) not so good at long range.

mw2 playing kids shouldn't be allowed guns or to talk about them teehee

Its a guard - he/she will be firing at people they are talking to a SMG or similar would be more than enough.

pass OP Is a freak

In northern ireland ive often seen cops guarding gates of stations with a combination of heckler and koch mp5's and g3 assault rifles.
