Rift compatibility test different from Steam VR?

The Rift compatibility test is different from the Steam VR test that supports the HTC Vive? My GPU is a Asus GTX980Ti, and CPU a Intel Core i7-2700K (3.5GHz) (8 core) on a Asus Sabertooth Z77 (LGA 1155). The Rift Test rejects my CPU, but the Steam VR Test reports Very High Quality VR score 11, Frames tested 13435, Frames below par 0%, CPU bound 0%. This is very confusing? The Rift and Vive are very similar in spec, so WHY the difference? Is there a LGA 1155 CPU that would pass the Rift Test? I would MUCH prefer to buy the Rift, over the Vive later this year. Advice please.

I had similar and from what I remember my Rift test got flagged up for the USB3. Using a 1155 socket i7 3770K @4.4GHz.

I think it's something to do with the older CPU's not having proper native USB3, so it's supplied by an extra chip, whereas the newer CPUs have proper/full native USB3 support.

Though I could be wrong on the above, been a while since I looked into it. I also don't have either headset at the moment to test but do have the Vive on order.

Does the Rift test not give a more detailed breakdown of what it thinks you fail on?

Edit: Which is why you'll see people talking about getting add in USB3 PCIe cards to get around it, though I've no idea if they are needed or not or if the CPU/chipset would actually be ok with out it.

The Rift test doesn't actually do a benchmark on your system, it just looks at the installed components and says yes / no.

The Steam VR test actually benchmarks your system, for an accurate reflection of how VR would perform.

^^ what that said

It just looks at a list. It takes no account of overclocks either. My 4.6GHz 2500k is significantly faster than their minimum recommended CPU and yet it flags my PC as incompatible. The really annoying thing is that it also displays it in Oculus Home every damn time I launch it. It doesn't stop my playing anything though, just sits there annoying me in the launcher.
