Looking for a new pc, my 5 year old rig is on its last legs and the power supply going pop means I am after something a bit nippier. Will do the odd bit of gaming etc but at the moment only have a 17" monitor, will likely upgrade to a 22" widescreen or some such in a few months though.

I have a case, mouse, keyboard, monitor.

Have got two hard drives one is SATA and the other IDE, so hopefully re-use these and also re-use my IDE DVD RE-Writer if IDE is even still compatible these days. Shall we say around £500 max. Will need a new power supply as well.

I have a copy of windows XP Pro, is this ok for running a machine with new components? As I don't want to have to pay for another OS at the moment, but will upgrade to Windows 7 later on.

see if the windows 7 RC is still availible. its windows 7 free for a year. otherwise yes. xp is not too bad. id have a look at the am3 route. you can get an awsome pc for about £550. if you can stretch that fatr i will post the parts list

Even for £500 you can get v good rig, hows this look? Ive included new HDD and optical drive as theyre prob better/faster than your old ones, being SATAII, and still within budget. If you can afford a bit more, then depending on your case you could get a new one, only thing missing is an aftermarket coler if you plan to clock, something like the sunbeam

Aside from probably a 500GB drive as wont be filling 1 TB just yet and use the other drives I have for storing data etc it looks good. Is there a point in getting a quad core CPU over that tri core one?
