Hi there,

I'm not much of a PC gamer anymore, but I'm gonna need a PC for when the Rift is released. I don't actually have room I'm my bedroom to place a monitor, since that place is now occupied by a TV. This PC would be used as a HTPC, and for gaming once I have my head in an OR headset.

I can get a Phenom 965 + motherboard for £50. So I was thinking that and a used 7950 would prepare me for Oculus. I think the CPU might be a bottleneck, so I was thinking that if a 2500k isn't much more expensive, I'll go for that instead, and OC it.

Are those processors still capable of playing new games? Would I benefit a lot getting an i5 over the Phenom?
Any other thoughts or ideas on what to get?
I don't want to spend more than £300

Thanks!

An overclocked 2500K is still a capable CPU.

But would it not be best to wait for the Rift to be released, also I know one of the marketing spiel that Nvidia put out with Maxwell release was a feature to reduce latency with the Rift.

I will be using this for films etc too. But maybe I could wait. Would you advise against the Phenom?

Regarding Maxwell, the 960 looks like alright, but performance is similar to 7950. Maybe latency reduction is worth the extra.
Looks look I should probably wait actually.

The rift is unlikely to be out in the next 6 months, they've now started on an input control system and say they wont release it until its all ready.

Can get a 3570k now! So that and a maybe Maxwell, if this latency thing makes a noticeable difference.

I own a DK2.......but yes I absolutely would wait for the final version to be released before buying any new hardware. If you buy at the same time you will get so much more for your money....if you buy now, there is a chance come release that you will then be looking at putting more money down to have it perform how you expect.

Yup - 6 months extremely unlikely. They are going to release a devkit for the planned controller input first. That will take some time, expected to be announced at the GDC. Then it needs time for devs to create final consumer quality content with this.. Even when the final CV is announced (if lucky for before xmas time), I would expect there to be limited stock for some time

I have the original DK Rift and decided not to buy DK2. Would rather now wait for its retail release.
Amazing bit of kit and I'll defo be buying one.

I still use my 2500k in my everyday rig and its more than capable. Flying a Mig 29 around Mount Everest in Outerra with Rift is rather impressive even on my low res version.
