Hello everyone, I'm looking for some advice on the best possible solution.

I used to upgrade very frequently, dabbled with phase change for a while and then built my last rig a few years ago. Last few days - my powercolour 4870x2 died(or possibly died). Anyway, went on to overclockers and purchase a MSI R9 390. Problem - my system is windows vista and is a no no.

So I now need to install a newer version of windows and thought is my old rig strong enough or is it ok? I intend to play games on it but work aswell.

I currently have

Q9550 cpu
Austek some deluxe motherboard
8g of Corsair dd2 ram or something cas, 5,5,5,15.

Also - is the 4870 x2 any good or very ancient already? if I fix it - can I run some sort of crossfire etc?

if upgrade - whats the best combo for overclocking with a budget of around 600ish +-? Ram used to be really expensive - seems a lot cheaper these days?

Thanks in advance.

What PSU do you have? It seems strange that the 4870 died then the R9 390 doesn't work unless the motherboard doesn't support such a modern card. The system you have isn't that terrible but will bottleneck a R9 390 slightly in a fair few games.

Best system with £600 would be a i7 5820k with a motherboard for £400 and add 16GB RAM for £80. After that I'd say get a new PSU making sure it is a minimum of 750w and decent quality. If any money left over grab a copy of windows or new case :)

My PSu is a Corsair TX750.
I meant the r390 works, ie boots and all but my windows is outdated and can not install the drivers.
My 4870x2 overheated a few times due to the crappy design of the heatsink - would get clogged within a few months. Had to dismantle and clear up a few times until it finally stopped working.
