Basically been working fine for a year or so. Suddenly the user started reporting problems. I started to investigate. At first seemed fine, then on a shutdown it BSOD'ed on me.

Installed P95 to check hardware. Came back after 30 mins to discover some major screen corruption and totally unresponsive system. Wouldn't even POST then. Left for 30 mins. Tried to power up, got to Windows load page and then just froze.

I'm thinking most likely to be PSU, then mobo. Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks

You left prime95 running on a system without monitoring it, particularly heat-wise? Bad move.

Sounds like the motherboard's dead to me, but I'd try replacing the PSU first, obviously.

Why do you think it's the PSU?

Sounds more likely to be the motherboard to be honest...

My thinking was that it seems to become a problem once something in the system heats up. Would have thought that would indicate the PSU. Anyway, I've now ordered a new Be Quiet 350W. If that doesn't sort it I'll swap the mobo.

Have you had a look inside your computer whilst it is on?

Does your motherboard have a heatsink or a fan unit?

Yes it has a heatsink. The point is though, something has obviously changed over time. I can't see how a passive cooled mobo would start to deteriorate in this way - surely it is more likely to be the PSU? Anyway, we will see and I will report back next week.

Okay doky :) Keep us posted - and Good luck :)

You guys were right - it wasn't the PSU. Anyhow, I've returned it for a full refund and since SB is just round the corner, gonna hold back for a week or so and build a mITX SB rig.

Cheers
