Hey guys, so I'm back off to University in September, so therefore, I'll have a fair bit of money lying around, so I want to upgrade my rig, I thought i'd come on here and get your views and opinions on the matter.

Notes: I only have a socket 1156, hence the CPU chosen.

Current Rig:

Processor: i5-750 @ 2.7Ghz
Ram: 8GB DDR3 Ram @ 1333Mhz.
GPU: Ati 5770
PSU: Stock 700w PSU (Came when I bought the computer last year)
Case: Antec 300 gaming case
Mouse: Logitech G5
Keyboard: Razer Lycosa
Headset: Turtlebeach P11

Future rig:

Processor: Intel Core i7 870 @ 2.9Ghz
Ram: 12GB DDR3 Ram @ 1333Mhz.
GPU: XFX HD 6970 2Gb ATI
PSU: Corsair CMPSU-850HXUK HX 850W
Case: Coolermaster HAF 932 Black
Mouse: Razer Lachesis (Already ordered)
Keyboard: Razer BlackWidow Elite
Headset: Turtlebeach P11

Total price: £882.16

Do you think this is overkill? I'm quite an intense gamer, I used to be more so on the 360, but now? I just game on the PC 24/7, not touched my xbox in over a month.

I just don't want to go out and start buying all these parts from September - March for it to be wayyyy overkill, what are your thoughts on the matter?

Comments are very much appreciated.

The RAM upgrade? whats that about? 8Gb should be enough and making it 12gb envolves using three sticks ( 3X4gb=12gb ) when the cpu memory controller is dual channel so it should be fitted in pairs.

Unless your going 2X2gb and 2X4gb sticks?

I shall indeed be using 2x2gb and 2x4gb.

no need to upgrade to a dead socket, what brand is the PSU that came with the computer, if its decent enough, just get a new GPU(6950 2GB or GTX570) and an SSD, maybe a new case.

edit: maybe get cooler and try overclocking the CPU.

If it's a dead socket then maybe I should try and get a motherboard bundle instead? that maybe has a sandybridge i7 on instead?
And it's a no brand PSU, made by the company it came with.

What would be some decent overclocking settings that I could apply to the 750 as of now? I've experienced with OC'ing before, but i'm not heavy on the subject.

And ah okay, I'll scrap getting the i7 then.
