Rig upgrade

Hello,

I'm looking to upgrade my computer. Several months ago, I bought the RTX 2080 hoping to get optimal performance but did not inform myself sufficiently. It worked decently on my current rig, however the last few weeks, whenever I start up a more demanding game (AC: Odyssey), the entire pc shuts down without warning after 1 minute.
After some research, I assumed it was the CPU giving me a bottleneck. This is my current rig:

Being: 650W power supply, 16GB RAM, ASUS Sabretooth 990FX MoBo, 250GB SSD, 3TB HDD, RTX 2080 (new), AMD FX-8350 CPU.

TL;DR: what do I need to upgrade to be all set for the next few years? I don't need to get 100% performance from the RTX GPU if this option is too expensive. 200 - 300€ budget is what I'm looking to spend max, if this is an option.

Thank you!

Hello Bickaxe,

Aerocool AP-650 650W: https://be.hardware.info/voedingen.21/aerocool-ap-650-650w.185065
Bought May 2013 (just like the rest of the hardware).
Haven't tried any other games on it yet.

What is particularly odd is that I've bought this RTX 2080 last year and been gaming with it for months - with the current rig. I have had a break and since booting Odyssey again since last week, PC shuts down.
Perhaps the CPU's cooling paste?

Thank you!

Without additional information, it's kinda hard to diagnose. Maybe some of the following questions might elude to the reason, or at least start the investigation:
  • Running MSI AB and RealTemp, what are your GPU & CPU temps at
  • Have you configured windows to give a mini dump so you can check what's causing the BSOD/shutdown?
  • The PSU is getting on a bit and a really bad unit - Don't use it!!! I would source a DECENT 550w spare to test the system again (Corsair RM/HX, Seasonic, Bitfenix, EVGA - gold/plat rated and over 550-600w)
  • Do you have any overclocks?

Hello and thanks for helping out!

- When idle, CPU's temperature is variable: between 40-55°C (tends to spike to 60 sometimes). GPU stays at 30°C.
When booting Battlefield V (without starting a game, just at start screen), CPU spikes to 75°C. GPU floats around 66 - 67°C

- I did not configure anything like you described, but I did view the eventvwr.msc to find the reason for shutdown. The message says the PC was shutdown due to a critical error with source: "Kernel-Power" (is that the CPU?)
- I'm sorry I did not fully understand what you mean about my PSU, what is wrong with it exactly? I've been using it for years. Is it not sufficient for the RTX?
- I did not overclock anything.

PS: the Graphics section on the screenshot shows a 4K screen but I do not mean to game at that resolution.

The recommended PSU for that GPU is 650w. It's an area you should never skimp on. I would go for 750w personally.
But you need to eliminate other causes before spending money.
