I'm joining my work's Reebok Ragnar White Cliffs relay this year, I'm past the point of no return so I have no excuses.

To give you an idea of fitness, I drink like a fish twice a week, only have two or three cigarettes a day unless drinking, in which case it's usually about 10 a night. Just this week I left my phone on a bus like a dumbass so had to run after it to try catch up. I ran for about half a mile before getting really tired, although this was pretty fast and in work clobber, so I suspect I could do 3/4m to a mile in comfy gear and rested up.

Not good enough, obviously. I have a treadmill at home which is a fairly decent one, nothing spectacular but it has electric inclines, various resistances and programs (actually, it's this exact one) and doesn't seem too bad for my purposes.

Now keep in mind I'm not running marathons or anything so I'm not aiming for zero fat or anything but I need to up my fitness considerably.

I used to be very fit in my younger days (Holland, cycled everywhere) so I don't think it'll be too much to get in shape again but I need a starting point.

What gear am I looking at? I'm obviously not going pro or anything so I don't need £200 shoes but what budget stuff is there? What about nip rip? Apparently this is a thing? What can I do to prevent it?

How much running an I aiming to do in a day? do I just run until I'm borked and then do it again the next day?

Anything else I need to know?

Cheers :)

Couch to 5k and a good bodyweight strength training regime.

Cheers, it was all a bit delayed but I got on it today, ran 3.1 on the treadmill. I don't know if it's miles or kms and I can't find the manual. No manuals online either as far as I can find. No indication of option to change either. I've emailed Very who I bought it from but I'm not hopeful.

Anyone able to chime in on this? The speed on Very is listed at kph so I suspect the distance is also in KMs but I really hope it's miles otherwise I'm even less fit than I thought i was!

Sounds a bit like me. I smoke also although like to think I don't.

You may as well splash out of a good pair of running shoes, Brookes or Asics. They will last longer than several pairs of cheaper brands and be a lot more comfy.
