Thought it would be best to post here rather than the hardware forum, I've been getting into supreme commander again and I really want to make it shine.

I currently have an x2 4000 =/
And a 3850
have 4GB of ram so that shouldn't be an issue...

The card seems to handle it pretty well, but I think I'm having a problem with processing power. Starts to crawl when there's a good amount of units on the map.

So what should I upgrade to? I have a 2GHz Phenom triple core sat here (but would need to gut the machine to put this other motherboard i have lying around in too) would just adding the Phenom give me any noticable improvement or do you think I would want to go intel?

Mainly this is a "how does your rig play it" thread :)

I used to play supcom on a 4200x2, 2gb 3200ddr and an agp x1950, the chip was oc'd to about 2.6/8 i think. It played it pretty well with a lot of units as long as I wasnt diving in around 200-300 of them.

Now got an e6600 at stock, 4870, 4 gig of ram and it still gets bogged down a bit when theres a lot of units. Might oc to 3.2 see if that helps.

I did notice your screenies other day in the Picture thread, they looked fantastic, howd u get them?

CPU is very important but the GPU plays a bigger part than a lot of people realise in Supreme Commander as well. Yours should be up to it though. Definately need 4GB RAM and you have that, so thats good.

An Intel Q6600 with a solid board would sort you out.

Aye.

Add a beefy quad core to the list ad a decent gpu.
My fps used to be 50 ish on 1280x1024, then dropped to 28 ish when playing in dualscreen mode @2560x1024, which means it's also very gpu limited. Now getting 35-45 fps playing at 1920x1080. That's with a [email protected] ghz and an 8800GTS 512.

Original Supcom isn't that bad, but for Forged Alliance the biggest problem is that the rendering speed goes away down, i.e. framerate is still ok, but all the units and stuff move really slowly.

That said, this is on skirmishes with 4 AIs and 1000 unit limit :o, single player campaign runs perfectly fine.

You want a quadcore and 4gig of ram minimum if your planning to play any big games.
I'm running a 3GHz Q6600, 4gig of ram and a ATI 4670 - handles the game nicely at 1920x1200 on pretty good settings.
Open the console with shift + @ - then type in "ren_displaynetworkstats" - this will show you the game speed that each player's pc is capable of running the game at. I'm just about graphics limited now, whereas I was cpu limited at 3.6Ghz with a 8800gtx.

it's shownetworkstats, not display :).

That tool is stupid, it accepts a framerate of 20, it says there's no bottleneck at 10 speed while I can clearly see my framerate change from 50's to 20's when changing the graphics settings.

Thanks guys, I'll have to see about building a whole new system I think.

And snow, it depends what you're willing to accept, I play it on my laptop and though I haven't checked it's probably no better than 20FPS, and while it can get a bit choppy I can still definitely play it.

The tool shows the gamespeed, if changing the graphics settings isn't making a different to it then you clearly aren't graphics limited :)

That just shows FPS, which doesnt really measure how supcom deals with huge amounts of units. I wish sites would use the builtin benchmark tool instead of just posting FPS :(.

There are a few things that can help.

1. Sorian AI - always found game ran better with large unit caps using this AI.

2. MadBorris's Core Maximiser.

3. OS - if using XP, use the "large address aware" header. Do a s earch on GPG net if in doubt.

4. 4Gb RAM.

Unless I'm totally wrong with this (and could be) slowdown seems to be principally related to the AI giving orders i.e. CPU related rather than GPU limitations, as you seem to be aware.

As stated above, Q6600 at 3Ghz + should do the job fine.

I can run a v's 4 x AI on 40 x 40 maps with a 2,500 unit limit cap with no slowdown. haven't tried any more than that.

Good luck.

No, hitting ''/'' shows the fps, the tool shows what speed the pc of a person is capable of running and who's the lagger if it slows the game down for everyone.

I am, as I don't accept framerates of 20. I am graphics limited in the way that my FPS go kaboom, I might not lag the game for others in mp, but it slows the framerate down for me.
Personally I like my fps above 30 in rts games, and above 45 in anything else, but most importantly racing games and fps.

Turn graphics settings/res to lowerst then run the built in benchmark. Thats the only way you can compare CPU's on this game. FPS doesnt really mean a lot unless its under 30, then you need a better card.

I think my [email protected] gets around 20k for this test. (Was around 12k on my old AMD cpu). Not at home right now so cant check what the exact numbers where :p

Cheaper option, download TA Spring and you won't have to upgrade and you get a better more balanced game to boot. ;)

Completely correct :) I cant stress enough the importance of Core Maximizer.

Downloading that core maximizer now, will see how that goes...

Those benchmarks are useful, but it would be nice to have some more in depth sup com benchmarks... hmmmm *looks some more*

Definately quad core would help for supcomm as it is one of the few games actually codes to properly use all four cores as they were desgined to be used, but to be truthfully honest i think at its busiest your gonna see some stuttering no matter what rig you run as it will bottleneck..
