Hi :)

Currently I have a i5 3570k @ stock, cooled by a H100i

My current GPU is a Asus 6950 3gb @ stock

My budget is £300

The games I play are BF3/4, Counter Strike GO, Crysis / Deus.

Many thanks

How urgent is the upgrade? The 290 should be within budget by Christmas. Since you're unlikely to upgrade the graphics card again on that machine it might be a better option.

I can clock it at 4ghz stable. I would really like to upgrade asap, I could maybe add £50-70 quid to the budget at a push

There will almost certainly be 290 cards at the £350 mark and possibly just below based on current speculation.

Why only 4ghz? Even the worst 3570k chips can manage 4.2ghz. With that cooling 4.4ghz should be attainable with ease.

Not really tried to be honest with you. I'm getting some better RAM for Christmas as a stocking filler so I'll try then.

i play BF4 on ultra 2xmsaa with a 3570k and a 7950 so im sure you will be loving it with the same CPU and a 290 ;)

As above though overclocking isn't that hard, go on the overclocking section and start a thread if yor stuck or need some advice.

In the same boat as you OP, got £300 to spend on a GPU.

I've narrowed down to:

Sapphire R280X Toxic 3GB

or

KFA2 GTX 770 LTD OC White

Both seem to perform close to a GTX780 in benchmarks, both look fantastic. I'm just waiting on R290 pricing before dropping the cash in case we get a model close to budget and I'm tempted. My 450W PSU may become a factor though.
