Yesterday was supposed to be like any normal day. But something was about to change that.

Went to boot my system up like I have done for the past 6 years when all of a sudden I get a 2 second beep from the mobo and my GPU fan went into full throttle.

All this and a nice "No Signal" on my monitor had me thinking, something is very wrong.

So, I turned everything off, left it for a minute or two and started again. I was to be greeted by the 2 second beep from hell yet again. It was at this point that I asked myself:

"Has my graphics card have just died on me?"

The clues were all there but I didn't want to believe it. NO!! I wasn't accepting it. How dare you just bugger up on me! I was to experience first hand how a dead GPU made people feel, gutted.

I opened my case and inspected my card. No loose connections, no burning smell, no nothing. At this point I realised the situation, I needed to prove that it is the GPU even though I was damn near certain.

That night I went round to a friend of mine and asked him if he could lend me a temp card. He provided me with a Geforce 7200. I popped it in and the problem was gone. However, as I'm sure you will understand, I need a new GPU.

Running a Core 2 Duo system with a 7200 is not the answer. So, I put it to you guys out there to advise me on what my options are. Yes I know on price/performance at present the 7950 is a good choice but I have to say I'm a bit more team Green.

Perhaps I will be convinced otherwise :)

Thanks for reading.

One last thing. Goodbye Winfast, you were the best.

I appreciate that. For gaming at 1080p I think that card will be fine. If I decided to go to a higher resolution then not so?

1920 x 1200 is OK with a GTX 670, you may also get away with 2560 x 1440 at reduced settings.

There is no doubting that AMD cards are better at high resolution.

i hope you gave it the send off it deserved

I still have the card. Well, it's just on the coffee table doing nothing like :)

It was a good card. Appreciate the replies guys. Incidentally, a friend of mine has been talking about this card quite a lot:

How would you say this compares with the 670 PE? I notice it has more memory obviously. Is it a better card?

The general consensus on these forums is that it is a better card. Great price too.

Personally I prefer nVidia.

Decisions, decisions. May I ask SkodMart, what's your experience with them and why do you prefer nVidia? I hear that their driver's are more reliable (awaits the AMD vs nVidia barrage :p)

I noticed how well the HD 7950 was performing for it's price and bought one.
I got the MSi Twin Frozr version, as I had previously had MSi Twin Frozr GTX 470s in SLi.

It turns out that the MSi version of the HD 7950 has been problematic for many users - they are great when you get a good one, but there seems to have been a fair few duffers about.

The card you have linked along with the Gigabyte version is the 'recommended' choice on these forums.

The reason I didn't try another HD 7950 is that I play WoT and there currently seems to be an issue with the 79** series cards in this game.

I am fully aware of the short comings of my Ti, but I must say, so far it has performed superbly and I am pleased with my purchase.

ive just come from a GTX480 to a HD 6990 and havent had any driver issues (just waiting for new driver to sort the dual-gpu card and ac3 out!)

other than that its been all good, i was first abit concerned about the driver issues, but like i said they seem to be fine :)

i think its either a 7950 or a GTX670 (MSI twin frozr 7950 are having troubles from what ive come across on here recently)

yeah the msi are having troubles regarding heat and excessive fan speeds because of heat making them hot the msi rep believes it was just a faulty batch to overclockers and reseating the heat sink with new past will solve this but other users who have done this are still reporting too high temps i had two myself and rma'd both due to these issues and am currently looking at getting a his ice Q or possibly a wf3 but i like the ice Q due to it pushing the hot air out of the back of the case and has goof vrm cooling apparently.

Stick it in the oven!!!

You got nothing to loose!! It works sometimes!!! ;)

Google baking graphics cards! Also there is a thread here somewhere about putting your card in the oven !!! :D

Worth a try until you get your new one!!! :)
