Was happily playing a bit of Assault Squad 2 last night then system powers down and I could smell a feint whiff of burning plastic and electrics. Switched it all off at the mains. Opened the case no visible damage, motherboard still powered on. Gutted, so just unplugged everything and checked it over and thought will look at it tomorrow when the effects of a few cheeky beers had worn off.

Came back to it today, placed it in another PCIe slot, my intention was to just recover some files that weren't backed up on iCloud (it is used for my design work as much as gaming). Took the GPU out for an inspection, no visible damge or burns/scorch marks. So placed it back into the system. Powered it up The GPU lit up I thought great, then Psssssshpt (or something like that) big white almost welding torch bright and more smoke. Powered it off immediately, cleared the smoke in the room.

I was hoping it would have lasted a little longer but it has had a good run and defo had my moneys worth out of it. My intention was and is to get a complete new build anyway. But this has forced my hand to get it much sooner. So looks like I am in a very similar situation to a lot of you guys. I'm hoping that I'm after a full system will give me a fighting chance to get back up and running soon.

You have my commiserations, not that there's ever a good time for a GPU to fail, but it's a particularly bad time for it to happen now.

Hoping my 1070 will last (touch wood) until/if the current GPU madness ends.

If you are after a whole new build your best bet is actually probably just a pre made at the moment. Easiest way to get hold of a card.
Yeah my thinking too, I was just casually looking at systems just last week to give me an idea what is out there. I'm fully aware of the current situation sadly. As I read more than I post. Just trying to get
feel what to opt for. I'm preparing for the worst in costs but there is a limit I'm willing to be taken a ride for. I have a MAC I can use for work but my PC gaming will have to go on hold, just as I was getting
back into it. If I can find a decent specced system for the money will defo go for it. Be nice to have a warranty etc to with a prebuilt.

Most sites offer a 1 year warranty, but I know a couple I've seen with a 2 year warranty, which is personally what I would opt for.

Thanks mate, yeah it is a sad time. Last card to go was a 580, the 980ti replaced that and breathed new life into the system. My 2600K is still ok I think will prob try and make a dedicated server out of the components once/If I get a replacement.
Think whatever I get will be a significant performance boost. So looking forward to that, just not the cost. I guess just keep on top of cleaning/admin of your card make sure it's clean and cool over the summer.

Most definitely mate, now more than ever I imagine with the current climate. Just unsure which flavour of CPU, pretty much Sold on team green for GPU. My monitor is G-sync and don't have the purse for a new monitor at the moment but the odyssey G7 is something I have looked at and seen recommended. Wouldn't mind a bit of HDR.

No chance of fixing? I'd have definitely tried, even if I'm underqualified and don't know how haha

Then again having smoke come from your PC is scary, I wouldn't even want to power it on again

The 980 TI is something I have been interested in researching recently and I read this problem has occurred with some versions of the 980 TI.

It's been reported as related to two SMT ferrite beads which eventually go up in smoke and can take other components with them.

Is yours the Gigabyte 980 TI G1 Gaming?

It's also meant to be fixable with a little bit of technical knowledge and the right tools to source and replace the burnt components.

We offer three year as standard and some sites will charge north of £150 extra something approximating our warranty, if they offer that at all. We feel that if you are spending money getting a gaming PC, you should at least be covered for a fair amount of time!

Happened with a friends 3090, they RMAd the card and it turned out it was just a busted capacitor. Your best bet here is to either just cop one of the 3060s on OCUK rn or if you're running ryzen try and cop an APU for the mean time since GPUs are very hard to get rn

You can thank me for setting you up for that perfect sales pitch.

A repair is a fair shout mate thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think it is worth the effort. I was just trying to ride this system out until next year. I have been wanting to upgrade for a while now.
Had this for over 6 years now. Yeah it did freak me out, I was just mid game chatting away then the PC powered own. Yeah certainly not cool having smoke sneaking out of your PC case

It is was the EVGA GeForce GTX 980Ti Superclocked, purchased from OCUK actually back in 2016. Been a superb card quite sad to see it go that way really.
But prefer it to happen to me other than sell it on after an upgrade. Then fail on the buyer.

Take the opportunity to upgrade. With the current GPU situation you are best to go pre build. The whole system will run better with all the latest gear.

I have been watching the UK market and it’s tough finding a GPU near RRP.

Funilly enough, my 980ti is the only graphics card I've had go pop. It was doing a sterling job in my kids pc. Managed to get an rx480 to tide them over until I can upgrade my 1080ti.

Me too. 980ti died about a month ago. Short circuiting so glad my PSU saved the rest of the system.

Sorry to hear that. I sold off my older cards in the last couple of months before they develop faults and while prices are decent, now just hoping that my vega keeps holding out but if not I don't mind getting a 1030 and paying old games
