BURT REYNOLDS, legendary movie actor and star of Smokey and the Bandit, has died at the age of 82.

Burt died Thursday morning at Jupiter Medical Center in Florida, his manager, Erik Kritzer, told The Hollywood Reporter.

The actor, who was nominated for an Oscar for his role in Boogie Nights back in 1997, was a Hollywood legend whose incredible career spanned seven decades and also included appearances in the likes of Deliverance.

Following news of his death, film director Edgar Wright paid tribute on Twitter, writing: “R.I.P Burt Reynolds, underrated as a dramatic actor (Deliverance), underrated as a director (Sharkey’s Machine), but also a rare movie star that seemed to be just having an absolute ball onscreen.

“Nobody broke frame with a bigger gleam in his eye. ‘Just watch ol’ Bandit run.

In the final paragraph of his 2015 memoir, he wrote: "I always wanted to experience everything and go down swinging.

"Well, so far, so good. I know I'm old, but I feel young. And there's one thing they can never take away: Nobody had more fun than I did."

I loved his films when I was growing up. Nothing better than a bit of Smokey and the Bandit.

Legend, Smokey and the Bandit they don't make em like that anymore. Plus many others of course. The king of the car chase movie :)

RIP Bandit. One of my all time favourite actors.

Here's hoping he doesn't just go through the pearly gates, but rather jumps through them in a Trans Am.

RIP Burt. One of the last old-school movie stars.
He was such a great actor, and it really looked like he was having fun making films. I think the blooper reels were first used after his films.

Stumbled upon Smokey & The Bandit only a few weeks ago on TV and happily sat there and watched the whole thing!

This and Cannonball Run - absolute classics!
